Inspired by the difference she could make in the lives of her patients, Mrs. Horton began her career in nursing as a head nurse in oncology at the University of Chicago Hospital in 1962. She subsequently was employed by the Chicago Board of Education providing health services and health education to the children of Chicago. For 37 years, Mrs. Horton excelled as a school nurse and Lead school nurse for the aforementioned employer before retiring in 2002.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Horton experienced the privileged opportunity to improve the health and education of underserved families and children at risk through various initiatives, including Help the Children to Breath, a joint parent-student asthma education program; New Attitudes, a project focusing on pregnancy prevention; Guidelines for Nutrition Education and Counseling –Emphasis on Weight Control and an Epilepsy Peer Counseling Initiative. In her retirement, she contributes to her community through services as Deacon and Health Ministry Moderator at Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church and an associate member of Jack and Jill of America, Chicago Chapter which is a membership organization of mothers whose mission is to nurture future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer services, philanthropic giving and civic duty. Retaining her professional alignment with the American School Health Association, Mrs. Horton has further devoted her time and resources in multiple capacities with the Illinois Nurses Association and the Chicago Board of Education.
During the early 1960s, Mrs. Horton earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Meharry Medical College. Subsequently, she obtained a Master of Education in guidance and counseling from Chicago State University in 1966. Through her undergraduate alma mater, she co-authored "Lifetimes of Dedication and Service-Meharry Medical College Nursing Graduates" in 2016. The following year, Mrs. Horton became active as the chairman of the Meharry Nurses Legacy Group endowed scholarship fund which assists deserving students who meet the established criteria.
In light of her professional accomplishments, Mrs. Horton accepted a Certificate of Appreciation as Lead Nurse from Chicago Public Schools in 1996, and has been recognized for Outstanding Presentation to the Scientific Program from the National Dental Hygiene Association. In 2011, she was honored with the 50 Years of Service Award from the Chicago-Area Chapter of Meharry Medical College.
One of Mrs. Horton's future goals is to grow funding of the Meharry Nurses Scholarship Fund. The projected goal is $100,000.00.
