Dr. John R. Bowling was named the Educator of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians in 2015.

Dr. Bowling obtained a bachelor's degree from Ohio University in 1965 and a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1969. After completing his medical training, Dr. Bowling practiced Osteopathic Family Medicine and Obstetrics in Lancaster, OH from 1970-1988. While in private practice, he held the academic rank of clinical associate professor at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine between 1977 and 1988.
In 1988 Dr. Bowling accepted a faculty appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) in Fort Worth Texas, retiring in 2016 after nearly 30 incredible years. During this time, he notably founded the nationally recognized Rural Osteopathic Medical Education (ROME) Program, an innovative four-year curriculum designed to better prepare medical students for rural practice. Collaborating with rural physicians across the state of Texas, he developed a very successful network of teaching sites to provide students front-line training and experience. Serving on numerous committees, Dr. Bowling additionally contributed to the University of North Texas Health Science Center as the vice chairman of the department of Family Medicine between 1991 and 1995 and the assistant dean of rural medical education between 2006 and 2016.
Affiliated with numerous other industry-related organizations, Dr. Bowling served as the team physician for Bloom Carrol High School in Ohio, and chairman of the department of medicine and president of the medical staff for the Lancaster Fairfield Community Hospital. He also served on the Fairfield County Board of Health and was a founding member of the Fairfield County Drug Abuse Board. In Texas, he has served as a volunteer physician for Grace Community Clinic, Grapevine, represented TCOM on the CATCHUM project (a collaborative project of all Texas Medical schools to develop curriculum in cancer prevention), the Rural Medical Educators Collaborative and as a board member of the Rural Training Track Collaborative.
Invested in his communities, he has been active in the United Methodist Church in Ohio and Texas a youth coordinator, teacher, administrative board member, staff parish relations committee member, a chancel choir member and a men's chorus member. He also coached youth baseball and basketball through the YMCA.
Dr. Bowling is Board certified through the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice, and is recognized as a fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), and a Costin Scholar of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). He has served on the ACOFP Committee on Education and Evaluation and the AOA Bureau of Specialists (BOS). He is past president of the Texas Society of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, has provided his wealth of expertise to the board of directors of the Texas Rural Health Association from 2004-2016, and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine since 2008. Among other organizations, Dr. Bowling has been active as a member of Osteopathic State Societies, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Physicians, the World Organization of Family Doctors and the National Rural Health Association.
Recognized for his accomplishments, Dr. Bowling was named the Educator of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians in 2015. Furthermore, he was presented with the Texas Society of Osteopathic Family Physicians T.R. Sharp Meritorious Service Award, Texas Osteopathic Family Physician of the Year, the TCOM Clyde Gallehugh Memorial Award and the President's Award from the Texas Rural Health Association.
