Dr. Sears has been an engineering scientist, research manager and director of research and development at Corning Incorporated both in Hickory, NC and Corning, NY, since 1990. Originally hired as a project manager at Corning Cable Systems (formerly Siecor Corporation in Hickory, NC) in 1990, he was manager of the technical staff of research, development and engineering in Hickory, NC, from 1996 to 2001. From 2001 to 2015, Dr. Sears rose through the ranks of Corning Inc to become an engineering manager, research manager, and research director. Prior to Corning Inc., he worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories for 10 years as a member of the organization's technical staff, first in Murray Hill, NJ, and then in Norcross, GA, between 1980 and 1990.
An expert in the research and development of optical communications, process engineering, modeling and simulation and project management, Dr. Sears holds several patents for the mechanical connection for polarization. During his years at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he notably conducted research on optical fiber and was able to push the limit of its measurements. Dr. Sears was also responsible for involvement with a project that allowed Corning to capture a significant percentage of the Japanese optical fiber cable market, developing brand new processes and equipment.
A former adjunct professor at Clark Atlanta University between 1987 and 1990 (while working at Bell Labs), Dr. Sears also lent his expertise as a member of the technical committee of the Conference on Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) in Washington, DC, between 1993 and 1996. Involved on numerous boards of directors over the years, Dr. Sears is currently serving on the board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Microphotonics Center since 2012. In Hickory, he has been a trustee and board of directors member of the Catawba Science Center, committee chairman of the Catawba Science Center of Education and member of the Catawba County 2000 Task Force. Dr. Sears is a longstanding member of the Optical Society of America and Pi Tau Sigma. He has volunteered his time with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity and is currently volunteering with the 4-H Mentor-Student Program which is part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ithaca, NY.
Dr. Sears has contributed articles to the Journal of Lightwave Technology and other professional publications, and served as a reviewer for several professional publications. He was editor for the Journal of Optical Communications from 1999 to 2007. In 1983, he was honored with a Best Paper Award that he co-authored for the Conference on Optical Fiber Communications. He has presented more than a dozen times at conferences across the country and abroad in such locations as the Netherlands and Venice, Italy. Furthermore, he has been invited to give two talks, "All-Optical Networks of the 21st Century" at Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1998 and "Minority Technical Professionals: Strategies for Success" with the National Society of Black Engineers at MIT in 1997.
Honored with multiple awards, Dr. Sears received a Siemens' 150 Year Anniversary Innovations Award in 1997. He also received a President's Award from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone for research and development of optical cable and connecting technologies in 1996, and numerous AT&T Exceptional Contribution Awards, among other awards. Dr. Sears has been cited in multiple professional publications, including the 17th edition of Men of Achievement and the American Biographical Institute. He has also been cited in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Born and raised in Houston, TX, Dr. Sears lived close to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which was very inspiring. Even more encouraged by his father, who was a great influence on his decision to pursue the sciences, he desired to become an electrical engineer but was unable to attend a college that specialized in the field. Instead, he studied mathematics. Years later, Dr. Sears lived out his father's dream. Receiving both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at MIT, he then completed a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, and began a wonderful career in engineering.
Dr. Sears has two sons, Marcus and Brandon. Marcus is an insurance account executive in San Francisco and Brandon is in the music business in Arizona.
