As a naturalist, writer, and artist Dorcas MacClintock has always lived with animals, furred and feathered.
HAMDEN, CT, February 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dorcas Eason MacClintock with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. MacClintock celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
As a naturalist, writer, and artist Dorcas MacClintock has always lived with animals, furred and feathered. Raccoons, kinkajou, coati, bushbabies, kangaroo rats, flying squirrels, ferrets, prairie dog, and an owl have been part of life in her home and studio. Some have been subjects of her books, others were models for her sculptures. Collies always are her steadfast companions. Beyond home and studio, the animals of Africa, particularly the hoofed mammals, are a continuing interest.
After graduating from Smith College in 1954, where she was introduced to field studies of small mammals by B. Elizabeth Horner, a professor who became both mentor and lifelong friend, MacClintock went on as a teaching assistant to pursue a master's degree in zoology at the University of Wyoming (1957). Three years later, married to fellow graduate student and geologist Copeland MacClintock, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. While her husband began work for his PhD at UC Berkeley, she found work as research assistant to Robert T. Orr in the Department of Birds and Mammals at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, 1957-1959. Dr Orr instilled the keeping of animals after placing his assistant in charge of the small collection of live mammals - snowshoe hares, a woodrat, a skunk named Grenadine, and bats of various species - that often appeared in the Academy's weekly live television programs, The author of books, as well as scientific papers, he also encouraged her to write. MacClintock's first efforts were appeared in Pacific Discovery. As research associate her Academy affiliation continued until 1981.
Museums provided background for MacClintock's work, from high school years she worked as student assistant in the mammal department at the American Museum of Natural History. After her husband's post doc appointment at Yale Peabody Museum took the MacClintock's and their two small daughters across the country to Connecticut, Hobart VanDeusen, curator and friend at the AMNH soon arranged that she would work at the Peabody on a collection of small bones from a New Guinea cave site. This task led to a museum position, curating the Peabody's extensive Osteology Collection. After turning to writing for publication, MacClintock was appointed curatorial affiliate in Vertebrate Zoology.
Among the ten books she has written is the award-history winning A Natural History of Giraffes (Scribner,1973), the first of four books she would do with paper cut illustrations by Ugo Mochi, the artist whose intricate and accurate work she had first seen at the American Museum. Another admired artist, J. Sharkey Thomas did illustrations for A Natural History of Raccoons ((Scribner, 1981). Animals Observed: A Look at Animals in Art (Scribner, 1993) includes works by artists through time. She has also lectured on animals in art at the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Albany Institute, the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls NY, and the Bruce Museum in Greenwich CT.
As a sculptor MacClintock enjoyed several years at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts with critiques on works-in-progress provided by two noted sculptors, Elisabeth Gordon Chandler and Laci deGerenday Her work has been featured in Wild Heritage: Leslie Delgyer Paintings - Dorcas MacClintock Sculptures, a 2003 exhibition at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Oradell NJ., and has annually been included in the Society of Animal Artists Art and the Animal juried shows throughout the US and Canada. It also has been seen in National Sculpture Society exhibitions at Brookgreen Gardens, SC and in New York, as well as being featured in Animals of the World: the Artist's View at the Smithsonian's Conservation and Research Center, Front Royal VA, and at the Bennington Center for the Arts Art of the Animal Kingdom.
The recipient of the Science Book Award, New York Academy of Sciences, 1974, the Smith College Medal, 1987, the Anna Hyatt Huntington Award, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, 2006, and the Bott-Borghi-Bransom Legacy Award, Society of Animal Artists, 2007, MacClintock is a Signature Member of both the Society of Animal Artists and Artists for Conservation. She is also a member of the National Sculpture Society, the Authors Guild, and the American Society of Mammalogists. She continues to actively support several wildlife conservation organizations
