For more than 30 years, Mr. Lewitt has excelled in the field of computer engineering, starting as a software engineer in 1973. Over time his responsibilities transitioned to increasing levels of management responsibility including as a corporate officer of a large public corporation (Intuit). He was mentored by several exceptional leaders including Andy Grove, Gary Butler and Steve Bennett.
He earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Arizona State University and a Bachelors in Computer Science from the City College of New York Grove School of Engineering (summa cum laude). He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Society for Quality. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. He taught college-level computer courses at Maricopa Technical Community College and was on the executive committee of the American Electronics Association Oregon Council.
Mr. Lewitt has been recognized with several honors. He received the Advanced Engineering Program Award from Honeywell in 1976 and the Product of the Year Award from Electronic Products Magazine in 1980. City College of New York presented Mr. Lewitt with a Career Achievement Award in 2013 as well as the Engineering Alumni Award and Eliza Ford Prize in 1973. The chief executive officer of Intuit also honored him with an Excellence in Leadership Award for his innovation and commitment to sustainable, repeatable software processes.
Furthermore, Mr. Lewitt's accomplishments have been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
He has brought transformative leadership and a passion for excellence to some of the biggest names in technology, spearheading numerous advances in the field during the last four decades. He is an invited speaker at technical conferences and a published author in technical magazines. He performed technical due diligence of potential acquisitions for both Intuit and ADP.
His expertise includes: Leading change that produces dramatic improvements (for example: offerings that leverage new technologies, improving offering quality, and leveraging core/context analysis to free up the resource to focus on customer differentiation), disruptive innovation, software architecture, software design, software engineering process, innovative solutions to customer problems, developing reusable components, software product lines, Six Sigma as a management tool.
His professional career began when he joined Honeywell's Large Information Systems Division, where he served as a software engineer from 1973 to 1978. At Honeywell he completed the Advanced Engineering Program. He worked on operating system products, compiler products and firmware for next generation (capability based) mainframe hardware. He also worked as a program manager. He was one of three engineers who developed the first meta-language based language translator at Honeywell.
Afterwards, he accepted the position of senior software engineer at Intel where he architected the core capabilities of the RMX line of operating systems and was one of three architects of the Intel microprocessor that powered personal computers running Microsoft Windows. Later as Engineering Manager for Intel's Systems Group he was responsible for the development of multiple hardware and software products (e.g. iRMX family, Software in Silicon, Multibus hardware and Unix reference ports). He launched and managed Intel's first overseas software development group. He was responsible for strategic planning as a member of the Intel Corporate Strategic Staff. He managed Intel's software technology lab.
In 1989, he assumed the role of vice president of engineering at Cadre Technologies (Computer Aided Software Engineering) before assuming the position of vice president for research and development at Automatic Data Processing from 1991 to 1999. From 1999 to 2001 he was the Vice President and site manager for the ADP Houston Texas facility before moving to Intuit where he was Vice President of Engineering. During his career at Intuit he worked in Corporate Engineering, TurboTax Engineering and QuickBooks Engineering. Mr. Lewitt was responsible for managing the development of the infrastructure required to transform Intuit from a desktop company into an Internet company and for managing the development of multiple Intuit products. He led the Intuit effort to leverage smartphones for financial applications. He retired from Intuit in 2007.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lewitt has emphasized the importance of quality, speaking on the subject in presentations titled "Passion for Excellence." He fought back against the popular perception that building high quality software was very expensive and was a vocal proponent that software could be engineered with exceptional levels of quality. Celebrated for his expertise, on this and other topics, Mr. Lewitt has spoken at professional conferences and published in technical magazines. Mr. Lewitt and Watts Humphrey were both keynote presenters at a conference in 2005 sponsored by the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. Other conference presentations include the Workshop on Performance and Reliability and STAREAST, a software testing and quality assurance conference.
