During his career, Dr. Henderson found success as a writer and military correspondent for the San Francisco Examiner. Moreover, he had thrived as a writer and a consultant for the Canadian Government in Ottawa. Additionally, Dr. Henderson served as an assistant professor at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York.
As a writer, Dr. Henderson has published several books, beginning with "Why the Viet Cong Fought" in 1979. Other written works to his credit include "Cohesion: The Human Element in Combat" in 1985 and "The Hollow Army" in 1990. Dr. Henderson has also contributed to articles featured in various professional journals and has been included in the book of "Best Newspaper Editorials" in 1990 and 1991.
A former colonel in the U.S. Army, Dr. Henderson dedicated more than 25 years to the military, beginning in 1961 as a second lieutenant and concluding his service in 1988. He notably served as an infantryman where he commanded troops at every rank, including a combat tour in Vietnam as a company commander. He served as a battalion commander, and also as executive assistant to the assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, and a senior arms control planner for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Dr. Henderson served for three years as a commander of the Army Research Institute, where he was responsible for directing hundreds of research scientists, as well as a $75M budget to maximize combat effectiveness.
Becoming involved in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Dr. Henderson soon after acquired a bachelor's degree at Stanford University in 1961. He concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative political systems and international relations at the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. He also graduated from the Army's Command and General Staff College in 1974 and National War College in 1982. Dr. Henderson was appointed by the president in 1992 to the Presidential Commission on the Assignment of Women in the Armed Forces in Washington. Dr. Henderson has testified before the senate and House Armed Service Committee on military organization and combat effectiveness.
In honor of his service, Dr. Henderson's notable decorations include a Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman's Badge. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
