Dr. Alexander is renowned as a professor of finance with more than 45 years of distinction in his discipline. Initially earning a Bachelor of Science in business administration at the University at Buffalo in 1969, he subsequently enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program at the University of Michigan, where he discovered his passion for the theoretical elements of finance. Graduating with a Master of Business Administration in 1970, Dr. Alexander returned to the University of Michigan, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in finance in 1975.
Dr. Alexander began his career with the University of Minnesota as an assistant professor of finance in 1975, ascending to the posts of an associate professor in 1978 and professor in 1982. Since 2002, he has contributed to the aforementioned university as the John Spooner chair in investment management. He has been additionally active as a visiting professor of finance at such academic institutions as the University of California, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Auckland. Dr. Alexander further flourished as an academy economic fellow of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission from 1995 to 1997 and a professor of finance for the Minnesota Banking Industry from 1998 to 2002.

Affiliated with the Midwest Finance Association, where he has held a variety of administrative roles, he has been a member of the scientific advisory committee for the Center for Advanced Study of Management and Economics at the University of Evora in Portugal since 2007. Among other honors, Dr. Alexander was presented with a Fulbright grant as well as an Ayres fellowship from the American Bankers Association.
