Dr. Ehsani entering his field as a research engineer employed in the Fusion Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin before securing the same role at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. In 1981, he was acquired by Texas A&M University, where he has since served in several noteworthy roles. Today, Dr. Ehsani is the director of the advanced vehicle systems research program (now the sustainable energy and vehicle engineering program) since 1992 and the Robert M. Kennedy endowed professor and full professor of electrical engineering since 2004.
A consultant and international lecturer in his field, Dr. Ehsani is renowned for his work in power electronics, motor drives, hybrid vehicles and control systems. As a result of his research, he now has 36 patents and pending patents in both the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Ehsani has also become a prolific writer, having co-authored 20 books on power electronics, motor drives and advanced vehicle systems and contributing approximately 150 articles to scholarly journals and 215 conference papers covering topics such as pulsed-power supplies, high-voltage engineering, power electronics, motor drives and advanced vehicle systems topics.
Dr. Ehsani is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin, from which he received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1973 and 1974, respectively. He later attained a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1981. Dr. Ehsani is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.
Dr. Ehsani is an elected life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), where he notably served as a member of the steering committee at the Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference. Likewise, he received a Field Award in Undergraduate Teaching in 2003. Dr. Ehsani is also a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and a member of several other professional organizations within the IEEE, including the Industry Applications Society and the Power Electronics Society.
The recipient of multiple awards and recognitions for his professional career, Dr. Ehsani was named as an Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year by the Brazos in 1984, and received several Prize Paper Awards through the IEEE between 1985 and 1992. Moreover, he was bestowed with a BP Amoco Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence from Texas A&M University in the college of engineering in 2004, was selected for the IEEE Vehicular Society Avant Garde Award for contributions to the theory and design of hybrid electric vehicles in 2001 and, among other recognitions, earned an IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to advanced curriculum development and teaching of power electronics and drives in 2003.
