A pioneer in the field of transplant surgery, Dr. Russell is presently a John Homans distinguished professor of surgery at Harvard University Medical School. A full professor since 1962, he earned the distinguished John Homans title in 1998. He is also a longtime affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital. First interning and completing his residency work at the hospital in 1956, he then became a teaching fellow and later clinical associate of surgery until 1960. Between 1962 and 1968, Dr. Russell served as chief of surgery, and from 1968 to 1990, directed the Massachusetts General transplantation unit. He notably founded the Boston Interhospital Organ Bank (now known as the New England Organ Bank) and is currently the chair of the Massachusetts General history committee.
In addition to his tenure at Harvard University and Mass General, Dr. Russell spent several years as an associate professor of surgery at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, was an associate attending surgeon at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and an associate visiting surgeon at Francis Delafield Hospital in New York City. Once taken on board at Mass General, he was responsible for completing the very first organ transplant performed at the hospital in 1963.
Early his career, Dr. Russell served on several committees, including the committee on tissue transplantation for the National Academy of Sciences, the allergy and immunology study section of the U.S. Public Health Service and the transplantation and immunology committee of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. He also chaired the allergy and immunology study section B of the U.S. Public Health Service and the transplantation and immunology committee of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Contributing multiple articles and papers to various journals and publications during his career, Dr. Russell also served on the editorial board for Archives Surgery, Surgery, Transplantation and other journals. He has long been on the editorial board of Annals of Surgery since 1966.
Dr. Russell is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a member and past president of the Boston Surgical Society and the Transplantation Society. He is also a longtime member of the Royal Society of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association of Immunologists, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Massachusetts Medical Society, among numerous other organizations. He received a Medawar Prize from the Transplantation Society in 2005.
Locally, Dr. Russell has served as a trustee for Pine Manor College, the Groton School and The Conservation Law Foundation. He served on the board of directors and as president of the Boston Fulbright Committee and was vice chair of the board of governors and trustee of the Jackson Laboratory with the U.S. Air Force.
Named in his honor, The Paul S. Russell MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation is a museum dedicated to drawing connections between innovations spanning a period of more than 200 years. From the hospital's charter in 1811 to present day, the museum tells the rich story of Mass General through interactive media displays, artifacts and photographs. Dr. Russell was honored with a Roche Pioneer Award from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons in 2005. Included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, Dr. Russell has also since been cited in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Chicago in 1944 and 1945, respectively, Dr. Russell received a Doctor of Medicine from the university in 1947. He has since become a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. In 1962, he received an honorary master's degree from Harvard University.
Born in Chicago, IL, Dr. Russell later married Allene Lummis in 1952 and had four children. He now has 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
