Mr. Johnson has accrued more than four decades of excellence in his field as a hospital administrator. Before embarking upon his professional journey, he attended Tennessee State University, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science. He subsequently participated in Reserve Officers' Training Corps in college, and, knowing that he would receive a commission upon graduation, chose a career in the medical service corps, where he remained for six years. In 1971, Mr. Johnson completed a Master of Health Administration at the University of Michigan.
From 1971 until 1976, Mr. Johnson rose from the position of an assistant director to acting executive director of the Kings County Hospital Center in New York. He became the executive director of the D.C. General Hospital between 1976 and 1986, and the president and chief executive officer of the Saint Louis Regional Medical Center from 1986 to 1989. Mr. Johnson was the executive director of the Grady Memorial Hospital of Atlanta between 1989 and 1993.
Since 1993, Mr. Johnson has excelled as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Detroit Medical Center. In addition to his work in hospital administration, he is the chief executive officer of RBJ Enterprises LLC, where he has worked since 2012. Mr. Johnson considers it an honor to have served as an administrator of four major regional medical centers throughout his career, and remains passionate about providing access to efficient and competent medical care. He is a member of the American Hospital Association and has been profiled among 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit.
