Ms. Riffenburgh was renowned as a painter and educator with a remarkable career spanning more than 40 years. She initially pursued an education at the College of William and Mary, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1955. In 1979, Ms. Riffenburgh graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, distinction in art. She continued her studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara, Italy, and with such renowned artists as Sergei Bongart, Kevin MacPherson, Matt Smith, Ray Roberts, Dan Gerhartz and Carolyn Anderson.
Ms. Riffenburgh began exhibiting her work internationally in 1975 in London and Pembrokeshire, Wales. Returning to San Diego, she served as an instructor at San Diego Adult College from 1978 to 1981, during which time she developed a sensitivity for color mixing in her work, a signature that would remain throughout her career. Back in Europe, Ms. Riffenburgh's work was chosen for display at The Hague between 1982 and 1986 and, adding sculpture to oil painting, in Carrara, Italy, in the 1986 to 1989 period. From 1990 to 2016, in the U.S. her work was juried into art exhibits throughout 16 states.
Locally in San Diego, Ms. Riffenburgh was active as a representative exhibitor at the Timmons Courtyard Gallery and the Cosmopolitan Fine Arts Gallery. She is the author of an article on the psychological impacts of color choice in visual artworks for the Journal of General Psychology and her works appear in two books: Land of Sunshine and Best of Worldwide Landscapes. Ms. Riffenburgh founded the Plein Air Painters Association of San Diego and was juried in as a signature member (or equivalent) of the American Impressionist Society, International Society of Plein Air Painters, American Society of Marine Artists, Catherine Lorillard Art Club, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and the California Art Club.
Fostering a lifelong desire to paint, Ms. Riffenburgh focused on her artist talents after raising her five children. Her work appears in European and American private collections and has garnered dozens of prizes and accolades from galleries and art associations throughout the world. She departed from this world in 2016 and is sorely missed.
