Dr. Markle is renowned as a family physician and educator with a career spanning more than 45 years of service to his patients. His interest in medicine was inspired by a desire to be of service as well as to follow in the footsteps of several family members who were practicing doctors. He initially pursued an education at Washington & Jefferson College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, in 1969. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1973 and a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1993. Furthermore, Dr. Markle has obtained certification from the American Board of Family Medicine.
From 1973 to 1976, Dr. Markle completed a residency in family practice medicine at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond. He entered private practice at the Mannboro Medical Center in 1976, where he would remain until 1986, and served in the National Health Service Corps from 1976 to 1979. Working as a physician for the JAARS Clinic at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in 1986, Dr. Markle further flourished as the medical coordinator of the Indonesia branch of the aforementioned institute from 1987 to 1994.
Following these accomplishments, Dr. Markle found much success with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in a number of capacities, including as an assistant professor from 1994 to 2004, a clinical assistant professor from 2004 to 2006 and a clinical associate professor from 2006 to 2019. From 2002 to 2007, he maintained his involvement as the director of family practice residency at UPMC McKeesport before accepting the position of site director, which he held from 2007 to 2012. Since 2012, Dr. Markle has excelled as the senior associate program director of family practice residency at UPMC McKeesport.
Additionally, Dr. Markle has been active in public health initiatives and charity medical outreach for decades. He has been affiliated with the Ninth Street Clinic as the medical director since 2007 and the president of the board of directors from 2007 to 2018. An in-demand speaker in his field, he has presented at numerous conferences and symposia, in addition to providing reviews for the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Annals of Family Medicine, and the Journal of Healthcare for the Poor and Underserved. However, Dr. Markle considers his greatest accomplishment to be establishing the Mannboro Medical Center, a clinic addressing the medical needs of an underserved and rural population.
