A highly successful statistician and consultant for numerous years, Mr. Wilder began his career in 1953 on behalf of the Washington Public Opinion Laboratory in Seattle. Acquired by Douglas Aircraft Corporation during the same year, he subsequently contributed for two years as a computing analyst. He subsequently held positions as a consultant statistician for various companies such as E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in Delaware before working as a group engineer in California. Additionally, Mr. Wilder established his own business in 1974, Wilder Associates, as its senior associate, with which he affiliated until 1982.
Mr. Wilder authored "Rating for Reliability Allocation," which was notably inducted into the Library of Congress. This qualitative technique was used for management decisions, paints, textile and packaging development, vendor and personnel development, athletic ratings and quality level selection. As a community leader, Mr. Wilder devoted his time to the Seal Rock Rural Fire Protection as a treasurer and member on the board of directors. He was also a member of several committees, including the Waldport Schools advisory committee, the Seal Rock RFPD board, the Beaver Creek advisory committee for the Oregon Land Conservation Development Commission, the Newport YMCA endowment committee and the Oregon Coast Commission for the Arts endowment committee.
Mr. Wilder attended Kellogg High School in Kellogg, Idaho, where he received letters in both track and basketball. Moving to Portland along with his family, he graduated from Grant High School. After serving for three years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific as a fire control man between 1945 and 1948, he acquired a Bachelor of Science in mathematics at Oregon State University in 1952 and a Master of Science in quantitative business analysis at the University of Southern California in 1965. Mr. Wilder also completed postgraduate coursework at the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon and the University of Delaware.
To remain aware of developments within in his field, Mr. Wilder was an active member of the American Statistical Association. He was also a member of the Student Athletic Managers Association, a past president of Chi Phi and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon and Phi Kappa Phi. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Wilder has been included in the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the West.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, on August 19, 1927, Mr. Wilder and his family relocated to Longview, Washington, Kellogg, Idaho, and finally Portland, Oregon, at the age of 16. He later retired on the central Oregon coast in Seal Rock and Coronado Shores. Mr. Wilder passed away on August 21, 2019.
