Having accrued more than 40 years of expertise in physical and rehabilitative medicine, Dr. Andary has garnered a laudable reputation as a physician and educator on behalf of Michigan State University. Before embarking upon his professional journey, he attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science, and earned a Doctor of Medicine at Wayne State University in 1983. Dr. Andary likewise completed a Master of Science at the University of Washington in 1989. Furthermore, he is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with subspecialty of pain medicine and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
From 1978 until 1979, Dr. Andary maintained involvement as a research and teaching assistant at Michigan State University. He completed an internship at Wayne State University from 1983 to 1984, and a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Washington between 1984 and 1987. Dr. Andary stayed for a clinical fellowship at the University of Washington as an instructor through 1988.
Dr. Andary returned to Michigan State University in 1989 as an assistant professor, rising to become an associate professor in 1993 and a professor in 2007. Since 1993, he has served as the residency director for Michigan State University's department of physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is also a former associate editor of the journal Muscle and Nerve, and the editor of "Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America: Outpatient Management of Pain," published in 1993.
Dr. Andary is the recipient of a 2018 Professional Service Award from the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, a 2018 Distinguished Public Service Award from the Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and was named as the 2014 Distinguished Physician of the Year by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. In addition, in 2019 he was named to the Sparrow Hospital Physician Hall of Fame. Outside of his career responsibilities, Dr. Andary enjoys such avocations as hiking, playing hockey, skiing, and spending time with his family.
