Dr. Wilson is renowned as a professor emeritus of history and an expert in the history of American city planning and urbanization. He initially completed coursework at Saint Joseph Junior College before enrolling at the University of Missouri, where he earned a Bachelor of Journalism in 1957. Dr. Wilson concluded his education at the University of Missouri, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.
Dr. Wilson began his career as an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota during the 1962 to 1963 academic year. He subsequently flourished at the University of Alaska Fairbanks as an assistant professor and an associate professor between 1963 and 1967. Following these appointments, he excelled at the University of North Texas as an associate professor and a professor of history in 1975. Eventually, Dr. Wilson accepted the designations of a regents professor of history in 1990 and a professor emeritus in 2001, both from the University of North Texas.
Extensively published in professional journals, Dr. Wilson is the author of several books of American history including "The City Beautiful Movement in Kansas City" in 1964. Among many other accolades, he was presented with the Lewis Mumford Prize from the Society for American City and Regional Planning History in 1989. He was additionally recognized as a National Endowment of the Humanities fellow. Furthermore, Dr. Wilson is active as a member of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History, where he has held a variety of administrative roles.
