Dr. Murphy is a writer and language educator with more than 50 years of excellence in his field. Inspired by his high school teacher, Brother Ignatius, Dr. Murphy joined the speech and debate team and discovered his passion for language. Prior to beginning his academic career, Dr. Murphy served his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force in the European theater of operations of World War II from 1943 to 1945.
Upon returning to civilian life, Dr. Murphy enrolled at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1947. During his time at Saint Mary's, he founded the Northern California Forensics Association, a speech and debate society which is still in operation to this day. He continued his education at Stanford University, earning a Master of Arts in 1950 and a Doctor of Philosophy in English in 1957.
From 1947 to 1948, Dr. Murphy worked as a journalist for United Press International in San Francisco, California. He taught at Saint Peter's High School in San Francisco from 1948 to 1950 before holding the post of an instructor at Saint Mary's College from 1950 to 1953. He later found success as an assistant professor at Stanford University from 1954 to 1959 and at Princeton University from 1959 to 1965. Dr. Murphy subsequently accepted a position at the University of California Davis in 1965, later excelling as the vice chancellor from 1968 to 1969, an associate dean from 1972 to 1975, and an emeritus professor since 1991.
Dr. Murphy is the author or editor of seventeen books on rhetoric and language, including "Rhetorical in the Middle Ages" in 1974 and "The Rhetorical Tradition and Modern Writing" in 1982. He is the recipient of the Chevalier dans L'Ordre des Palmes Academiques in 1987, and the Benemerenti Medal, presented by Pope John Paul II, in 1979, among other honors. He is one of the founders of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric, and founding editor of its journal, Rhetorica. He is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, Fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America, and a Distinguished Scholar in the National Communication Association.
