Dr. Laurie W. Newell is currently serving as the superintendent of the Essex Regional Educational Services Commission.

Currently serving as the superintendent of the Essex Regional Educational Services Commission, Dr. Newell has accrued more than 20 years of inimitable experience in the field of educational administration. She has held numerous administrative positions with Paterson Public Schools, including as a chief reform and innovations officer/assistant superintendent between 2012 and 2016 as well as the executive director of human resource services from 2010 to 2012. Likewise, she contributed to Newark Public Schools as a research scientist at the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Testing, the director of organizational development/HRS and the executive director at the Office of Innovation and Change between 2004 and 2010. Dr. Newell initially began her career in education as a staff member of the University of Rhode Island between 1997 and 2002, maintaining her activity as a teaching instructor and a research assistant in the department of environmental and natural resource economics and as a teaching fellow for the Marine and Environmental K-12 fellowship program in partnership with the National Science Foundation.
In her career-related endeavors, Dr. Newell has distinguished herself as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University since 2019. Furthermore, she worked as a manager of collections management and strategy with American Express from 2002 to 2004. Avidly engaged as a civically-minded citizen, Dr. Newell has contributed her time and resources as a volunteer at the Women's Ministry Leadership Committee as well as for the Care Ministry. She has also volunteered at local soup kitchens.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Dr. Newell pursued a formal education at Binghamton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1992. She continued her studies at the University of Tennessee, obtaining a Master of Science in agricultural and environmental economics in 1995. She subsequently graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Doctor of Philosophy in economics/ environmental and natural resources in 2003. She concluded her academic efforts with a Master of Business Administration in business management from the University of Phoenix in 2009. Eminently qualified, additional certifications and honors to Dr. Newell's credit include a standard certificate as a New Jersey school administrator, a Patricia Roberts Harris fellowship and a Gift of Hope scholarship.
To remain well-versed in the intricacies of her field, Dr. Newell has maintained her affiliation with various organizations pertinent to her vocation, such as the New Jersey Association of School Administrators, the New Jersey Council of Educational Services Commissions, the New Jersey Network of Superintendents and the New Jersey Superintendents' Study Council. Active on the foundation board of directors for the Association of Educational Services Agencies, she additionally participates on the executive committee for the Association of Educational Service Agencies and the New Jersey Council of Education. Dr. Newell is also a member of the honorable society of Gamma Sigma Delta.
Dr. Newell initially entered the field of education out of a sense of idealism and the urge to make an impact on her community. She departed from her well-paying job with American Express to become a data analyst with the Newark Public Schools, knowing that she would have more time for her daughter and that she was honoring her family's legacy as educators. Attributing her subsequent success to her hard work and her propensity to always ask difficult questions, Dr. Newell believes wholeheartedly in her work, and that sharing freely the bounty of education will improve the lives of children everywhere.
