Beveridge, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Beveridge has enjoyed a rewarding career as a sociologist, demographic researcher and scholar. He began his academic career as an assistant and associate professor at Columbia University from 1973 to 1981. He then joined Queens College and Graduate Center, City University of New York, as an associate professor. He later became a full professor and served as chair of the Queens sociology department from 2006 through 2018. Dr. Beveridge is an alumnus of Yale University where he earned a B.A. with honors in economics (1967), and MPhil. (1971) and Ph.D. (1973) degrees in sociology.

Dr. Beveridge brought his research and expertise to new audiences as president of SocialExplorer, Inc. (www.socialexplorer.com), which he co-founded with Ahmed Lacevic. They first collaborated on a data visualization project funded by the National Science Foundation and The New York Times with the goal of developing a simple online interface that opens up access to demographic data using visual mapping tools. The co-founders established SocialExplorer in 2007 and have grown the company into a diverse team of engineers, designers and data scientists across two continents. The company serves customers in education, media, business, government and more. Millions of people from around the world have used Social Explorer to explore data visually and share their insights. Social Explorer has won several awards, including a Webby Award (2016), two Webby honorees (2014 and 2015), and a Choice (American Library Association) Outstanding Academic Title (2019).

In addition to his academic and business activities, Dr. Beveridge has brought his expertise to the legal and media worlds. Since 1993 he has served as a demographic consultant in redistricting, housing and jury composition litigation in about 100 cases before state and federal courts. He has been a demographic and census consultant for The New York Times since 1993 (where he has been cited in more than 1,000 articles). A prolific author, Dr. Beveridge published his first book in 1979, entitled African Businessmen and Development in Zambia (with Anthony Oberschall). In 2013, he co-edited and contributed six chapters to New York and Los Angeles: The Uncertain Future (with David Halle). In addition, he has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, conference presentations, papers and reports. He wrote the demographics column for the Gotham Gazette from 2001 to 2012, where he published more than 100 articles on New York City-related topics. He has given interviews for numerous media outlets including WNYC Radio, CNN, NY1, Axios, Slate, Mother Jones Magazine, and WABE Atlanta Public Radio, among many others.

Dr. Beveridge has received numerous grants for his research from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, American Council of Learned Societies Ford Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other sources. He has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the Social Science History Association, the Population Association of America, the Eastern Sociological Society and the American Sociological Association, and held positions in several of these organizations. In 2007, the American Sociological Association honored Dr. Beveridge with the Award for the Public Understanding of Sociology. Dr. Beveridge has been a lifelong advocate for education, equality, and civil rights. He worked extensively on these causes in his longtime home city of Yonkers, NY, where during the public school and housing desegregation crisis, he served as Trustee (1986-1991), and President (for one year) of the Yonkers School Board. He also was an active member and founder of several community groups in the city. He worked to reform the Yonkers Democratic party, and in 1992 he served as the second vice-chair. More recently (in 2019) he was appointed to New York State's Complete Count Commission for the 2020 Census by the State Senate Majority Leader to assist with the state's efforts to carry out the upcoming decennial census successfully.
