A retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a writer and consultant, Dr. Estes has enjoyed an eclectic career both locally and abroad. Ending his career as a professor of history at the College for International Studies in 1997 after two years at the university, the institution is an American university that offers American higher education in the very heart of Madrid. Dr. Estes formerly held teaching appointments at Duke University and the U.S. Naval Academy between 1974 and 1984. Additionally, he contributed for nearly 25 years in the military in the U.S., Spain, and France, graduating from the Naval Academy in 1969 and serving in a variety of command and staff assignments until 1993.
The editor of several books, Dr. Estes has written extensively in military and academic journals throughout his career and was a historical writer for the U.S. Marine Corps Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Some of his latest books include "M50 Ontos and M56 Scorpion 1956-70: U.S. Tank Destroyers of the Vietnam War," "Super-Heavy Tanks of World War II" and "Handbook for Marine NCOs." As a consultant, Dr. Estes was proud to be selected by General Martin Dempsey in 2005 to write the operational narrative of his campaign in Iraq as the commanding general of the First Armored Division from the task force to Baghdad from 2003 to 2005. Shortly thereafter, he was selected by General James Mattis to write the official history of Marine Corps operations in Iraq from 2004 to 2006.
Some of Dr. Estes' other noteworthy roles included consultant roles for the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Development Command and for Computing Technologies, Inc., a private company in Falls Church, Virginia. He was also a research fellow at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies, a contract historian to the first armored division of the U.S. Army in Wiesbaden, Germany, and a senior research fellow at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. Among his professional memberships, Dr. Estes is active with the American Historical Association, the U.S. Commission on Military History, the Society for Military History and the U.S. Naval Institute.
Born in Seattle, which was a nexus for naval activity during the 1950s, Dr. Estes applied for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps and the Naval Academy in 1964 and received appointments to both. Entering the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1965, he later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1969, followed by a Master of Arts at Duke University in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in European History at the University of Maryland in 1984. Dr. Estes graduated from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 1985.
Recognized with several awards and honors during his time in the military, Dr. Estes notably received two Meritorious Service Medals and was decorated with a Cruz de Merito (Naval) con Distinctivo Blanco in the Kingdom of Spain. He also received a Third Place Award as Outstanding Navy ROTC Instructor from the American Defense Preparedness Association in 1983 and was made an Honorary Legionnaire in the Spanish Legion in 1992. Dr. Estes later received a Gutenberg e-Prize for a Distinguished Dissertation in History from the American Historical Association in 2001.
