Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Wilcox initially earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1963 before obtaining a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Marquette University Law School in 1966. Subsequently, he was admitted to practice by the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1966 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1967. A prominent member of the legal landscape within his region, Mr. Wilcox is a member of the American Bar Association and was elected a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 1979.
Excelling of counsel and as a shareholder with DeWitt LLP since 2001, Mr. Wilcox began his career as a law clerk in 1966-67 for the Honorable Thomas E. Fairchild on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He was an associate and partner with Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field from 1967 to 1983, a partner with Quarles & Brady from 1983 to 1990, a partner with Stolper, Koritzinsky, Brewster & Neider from 1990 to 1994 before establishing Stolper & Wilcox, where he remained active from 1995 to 2000. Initially interested in his field due to its complexity, Mr. Wilcox considers the highlight of his career to be a co-author of the three-volume treatise, Marital Property Law In Wisconsin, the standard reference in the field. The treatise describes the community property system adopted by Wisconsin effective January 1, 1986. Wisconsin was the first state in the United States to change from the common law spousal property system to the community property system.
Interested in contributing his skills to his community, Mr. Wilcox has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School, has lectured numerous times for the State Bar of Wisconsin, served on the Board and the finance committee of the Meriter Foundation, the Marital Property Implementation Committee for the Wisconsin Legislative Council of the Wisconsin Legislature, Chair of the Marital Property Committee of the Real Property, Probate and Trust law section of the American Bar Association, and Chair of the Taxation Section and member of the Board of the Real Property, Probate and Trust law section of the State Bar of Wisconsin. He is a member and past president of the Madison West Rotary Club. A celebrated lawyer in his field, Mr. Wilcox has been honored in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Super Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America. In 2014, Mr. Wilcox was elected by his peers as the Best Lawyers' Lawyer of The Year in Trusts and Estates in the Madison area.
