Accumulating more than 55 years of professional excellence, Ms. Flanigan retired in 1986 from business and went to school in architecture to begin a new career. She retired from architecture in the early 2000s. Formerly the president and chief executive officer of Analytica, Inc., in Barrington, Illinois, from 1979 to 1983, she was also notably one of the founding members and on the board of directors of Information Resources Inc. from 1977 to 1986. Additionally, Ms. Flanigan provided her expertise as the vice president of NPD Research in Schaumburg, Illinois, from 1973 until 1977.
A consultant for several companies during her career, including Quaker Oats, Ms. Flanigan's career accelerated after helping establish Information Resources, Inc., which went public in 1983. The company, which provides big data and predictive analytics solutions, offers market tracking information and insights, forecasting and data management software for companies worldwide. A community leader for many years, Ms. Flanigan found success as a national assistant secretary for Young Republicans early on in her career between 1969 and 1971. She later provided her services as a computer tech for the President Obama campaign in 2008 and 2012. She says that her work with the Obama campaign was the best job of her life. "It was not only interesting, but there was something about him that inspired so much optimism, so much inclusivity, it was like living in the kind of world I wanted to grow up and live in."
An alumnus of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Ms. Flanigan received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. She later received a Master of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh in 1970 and a Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1990. She is a member of the National Organization for Women. A nonprofit, American feminist organization, it is devoted to achieving full equality for women through education and litigation. She splits her time between Paris, France and living near her grandchildren in Charlottesville, Virginia (grandkids are the best, because you get all the fun and all the love and you get to sleep all night).
