Griffin with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Griffin celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Having accrued nearly 55 years of inimitable expertise in the fields of literature and education, Dr. Griffin bears the illustrious title of a professor emeritus, having retired from his position as the Morse-Alumni distinguished graduate professor at the University of Minnesota in 2010. Before embarking upon his journey through academia, however, he pursued a formal education of his own at the University of San Francisco, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in English, cum laude, in 1959. Having accepted a graduate school fellowship via the Danforth Foundation, Dr. Griffin was subsequently invited to enroll at Stanford University.

Commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Dr. Griffin was called to active duty in the field artillery, and thus could not immediately begin his studies. He served in West Germany until 1962, after which he returned to the United States and began his doctorate research in British and American literature. After four years of examinations and the completion of his dissertation, he obtained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy, and subsequently joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota, where he held the position of an assistant professor of English between 1966 and 1969. Throughout his tenure, during which he advanced to the role of a professor, he was notably appointed to several positions of academic leadership, serving as the director of graduate studies in English from 1972 until 1975 and as the chairman of the program in American studies between 1980 and 1988. In acknowledgement of his many accomplishments, the university designated Dr. Griffin as a distinguished university teaching professor in 2001, and inducted him in their Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

Beyond his responsibilities at the University of Minnesota, where he served on more than 270 master's degree and doctorate committees and personally directed more than 40 dissertations, Dr. Griffin earned distinction as a visiting professor at several institutions within the United States and abroad. Moreover, he contributed his services at the University of San Francisco in 1968, at Stanford University as a professor of American literature from 1971 to 1972, as Senior Fulbright Professor at the University of Salzburg in 1983 and 1984, and as a visiting professor of English and North American studies at the University of Amsterdam from 1996 to 1997. He was additionally active as a Fulbright professor, during which time he traveled abroad at the direction of the Fulbright Commission and the United States Information Agency in order to train teachers in other nations, particularly in Austria, Sweden and Germany. Dr. Griffin's involvement in the Summer Institutes in American Studies for International Teachers, in particular, yielded over 300 secondary school and teacher-college instructors from nearly 20 nations over the course of almost 10 years.

Specializing in the literature and history of the American Colonial era, Dr. Griffin has published a great many books and dozens of articles, lectures, and reviews pertinent to his field of research. To name only a few examples, he authored "Jonathan Edwards" in 1971 and "Old Brick: Charles Chauncy of Boston, 1705-1787" in 1980. Outside of his particular focus, Dr. Griffin served as an editor for "The Telling Image: Explorations in the Emblem" in 1996, and has written chapters for such books as "Recasting America: Culture and Politics in the Age of Cold War" in 1989, "Handbook for the Study of the United States" in 1990, "American Studies and Peace" in 2001 and "The Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment" in 2010.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Griffin has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He drew particular praise as the University of Minnesota's Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 1998. Furthermore, he was bestowed with such recognitions as the eponymous Dr. Edward J. Griffin Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education from the University of San Francisco in 1998, the Elizabeth Kolmer Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring in the Field of American Studies from the Mid-America American Studies Association in 1999, the All-University Award for Outstanding Graduate and Professional Teaching from the University of Minnesota in 2001, the Ruth Christie Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching of English from the University of Minnesota in 2002, and the Excellence in Mentoring Award from the American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies in 2009. Dr. Griffin has likewise been a member of the honor society of Alpha Sigma Nu since 1958.

Having sought to remain well-versed in the intricacies of his field, Dr. Griffin maintained his professional affiliation with various pertinent groups, including American Catholic Historical Association, the American Literature Association, the American Studies Association, the American Association of University Professors and the Modern Language Association of America. Holding a number of administrative roles with the Mid-America American Studies Association between 1988 and 1994, he was also associated with the Minnesota Historical Society, the Northeast American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing, the Society of Early Americanists and the American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies. Furthermore, Dr. Griffin was a member of the Friends of Jonathan Edwards, the Flannery O'Connor Society, the Catherine Maria Sedgwick Society and the H-AMSTDY Electronic Discussion List, where he excelled on the board of directors from 1993 to 1994.

In his spare time, Dr. Griffin is dedicated to his wonderful family, which includes his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean, and his three incredible children, Patricia, Theresa and Joan. Throughout a career of many esteemed achievements, he is especially proud to have received the title of a Fulbright Professor, and having been appointed to the U.S. Selection Committee for Fulbright Scholars. Upon his retirement from the University of Minnesota faculty, his wife, Jean, established the Edward M. Griffin Fellowship to assist incoming graduate students in the University's Department of English. Despite enjoying the fruits of his retirement, Dr. Griffin has hardly been idle, and avidly continues his career as an educator at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a program specifically tailored for senior citizens.
