Dr.Barbara Andereck is currently the Jacob S. Zook professor of physics and astronomy.
DELAWARE, OH, March 12, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Barbara Andereck has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Driven by a love of teaching, Dr. Andereck pursued a career in education, culminating in her current role as the Jacob S. Zook professor of physics and astronomy at Ohio Wesleyan University. Additionally, she serves as a peer reviewer, a team chairperson and an appeal board member for the Higher Learning Commission. Since joining Ohio Wesleyan in 1985, Dr. Andereck has worked both in faculty and administrative roles. As an academic administrator she was in charge of the university's assessment and accreditation.
During the earliest years of her career, Dr. Andereck gained valuable expertise in varying educational positions with Kenyon College, the University of Texas at Austin, Rutgers University, and Southwest Missouri State University. Over the course of her career, Dr. Andereck has taught courses on topics as diverse as elementary astronomy, cosmology, elementary physics, the nature of time, contemporary physics, classical mechanics, electromagnetic theory and quantum physics. Her research interest in condensed matter physics, specifically, liquid crystals and their phase transitions, led to many peer-reviewed publications, including a Physical Review Letter co-authored with Bruce R. Patton and a book chapter on the "Anisotropy of the Nematic-Smectic-A Phase Transition."
Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Dr. Andereck earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in physics and mathematics from Southwest Missouri State University in 1973. Subsequently, she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Spurred by her interest in undergraduate physics education, Dr. Andereck has authored such publications as "Using Contour Maps to Teach Electric Fields and Potential," "Measurement of Air Resistance on an Air Track," and an unpublished book, Underlying Physics, to supplement her contemporary physics course.
In light of her outstanding teaching, Dr. Andereck was awarded the Sherwood Dodge Shankland Teaching Award. Her leadership and service were recognized by the Bishop Francis Kearns Award from Ohio Wesleyan University and the Maxwell Award from the Ohio Section of the American Physical Society. Looking toward the future, Dr. Andereck intends to continue to serve the broader higher education community, as someone who contributes across institutional lines, specifically as a consultant to colleges and universities as they design meaningful ways to assess student learning and when they are constructing their accreditation narrative.
