Ira Dempsey Gruber is a military historian and educator. He taught at his alma mater, Duke University, in North Carolina, from 1961 to 1962. He then relocated to Virginia where he was a fellow at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture from 1962 until 1965. He then moved to Los Angeles and taught at Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1965 and 1966. Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, he next aligned with Hanszen College, which is one of the four original colleges affiliated with Rice University, from 1968 until 1973. He became a full professor in 1974 and retired as the chairman of the history department as a Harris Masterson Jr. emeritus professor of history in 1987.
Dr. Gruber served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1955 to 1957 where he held the title of crypto security officer on the USS Wiltsie. He received a Bachelor of Arts at Duke University the same year he entered the reserves and soon after completed both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at Duke in 1959 and 1961. A retired Navy reservist, Dr. Gruber was a John F. Morrison professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College between 1979 and 1980 and twice served as a visiting professor of military history at the U.S. Military Academy between 1984 and 1985 and 1992 and 1993. He also served on the U.S. Air Force and the Department of the Army history advisory committee.
While teaching, Dr. Gruber wrote extensively. He published over a dozen books as author, co-author and editor, covering topics of American military history and the American Revolution. He also served on the editorial board and as chairman of the board of the Journal of Military History from 1995 to 1999. Some of his books include "Warfare in the Western World," "The Howe Brothers and the American Revolution" and "Books and the British Army in the Age of the American Revolution." "Books and the British Army," which was released in 2010, identifies which, among over nine hundred books on war, were considered most important by British officers and how those books might have affected the army from one era to another.
A member of the Society for Military History, Dr. Gruber was a trustee for the organization for eight years beginning in 1987. Established in 1933, the Society is a U.S.-based international organization of scholars who research, write and teach military history of all time periods and places. It includes naval history, air power history and studies of technology, ideas and home fronts.
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Gruber received the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching at Rice University in 1974 and 2001. He was also honored with an Edwin H. Simmons Award in 1998 and a Samuel Eliot Morison Prize in 2013 from the Society for Military History. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gruber has been included in approximately 45 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
