Now a professor emeritus, Dr. Batto contributed for 35 years as a religious studies educator. He began teaching in 1971 as an assistant professor of the Old Testament at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he taught for four years. Over the next decade, he parleyed his knowledge of religion at Willamette University in Oregon and theology at the University of Dallas and before becoming a faculty member at DePauw University in Indiana. Hired as an associate professor of religion in 1987, Dr. Batto retired as the Walter E. Bundy Professor of Religious Studies in 2006.
Throughout his career, Dr. Batto has traveled the world on international service trips with his students. He has also been fortunate to have his wife, a German major who spent a year living in the country, accompany him on some of his journeys. An expert in ancient near east studies, Dr. Batto has conducted extensive research as a scholar of the Bible. His focus in most of his scholarship has been in the understanding of how the Bible fits into ancient Near Eastern culture and how such knowledge has influenced how one interprets Sacred scripture.
A prolific author, one of Dr. Batto's books, "Slaying the Dragon: Mythmaking in the Biblical Tradition" in 1992, argues that biblical authors, like other ancient Near East authors, used mythic traditions in composing their works. He also authored "In the Beginning: Essays on Creation Motifs in the Ancient Near East and the Bible" in 2013, which is a collection of six of his most important previously published essays, as well as two new contributions. Dr. Batto co-edited "Biblical Canon in Comparative Perspective" in 1992 and, years later, co-edited "David and Zion" in 2004, which is a 444-page volume that includes chapters written by 21 different scholars. Additionally, he has authored numerous articles in various peer reviewed journals and has served as an associate editor and book review editor for Catholic Bible Quarterly.
For many years he has volunteered his time in both federal and state prisons. Dr. Batto conducts religious services in the Putnamville Correctional Facility in Indiana, a medium-security prison for men. As a Prison Visitation and Support volunteer he also visits with prisoners in the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Dr. Batto received a Bachelor of Arts at Maryknoll College in 1963. He later achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in ancient near eastern languages and literatures at Johns Hopkins University in 1972. A past president of the southwest region of the Society of Biblical Literature, Dr. Batto is also a member of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, the American Oriental Society and the American Schools of Oriental Research.
Dr. Batto acquired a research grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities in 1975. He completed a summer seminar fellowship at Yale University in 1990. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Batto has been cited in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.
