Dan A. Lewis Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A celebrated figure in academia for nearly 50 years, Dr. Lewis has maintained activity with Northwestern University since 1975. He is currently a professor of human development and social policy, and a faculty fellow at the Institute for Policy Research on campus. Dr. Lewis' tenure at Northwestern likewise included serving as the projects administrator for the Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Research, the director of undergraduate education at the school of education and social policy and the chairman of the graduate program on human development and social policy.

Dr. Lewis also recently concluded his role as the director of the Center for Civic Engagement in 2019 after more than 10 years, which notably encourages students to enhance their academic experiences through voluntary service and research to help build communities. He has continued his career as a full professor of education since 1990. Dr. Lewis formerly worked for three years at Stanford University as the director of Stanford Workshops on Political and Social Issues, was a survey controller for the Scientific Analysis Corporation and a research associate for Arthur Bolton Associates in California.

To share his expertise and insight with others, Dr. Lewis has often presented workshops throughout his career. He is also a former visiting scholar at the school of education at Stanford University and the University of California at Santa Cruz. Additionally, Dr. Lewis' career has included service as an interim advisory committee member on mental health for the City of Chicago and as a member of the human rights authority for the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission.

Dr. Lewis' research over the past four decades has provided an approach to studying social policy that meets the challenge of a large transformation in social policy. At the Institute for Policy Research, he has directed major program projects on community reactions to crime, deinstitutionalization of state mental health patients and Chicago school decentralization. Dr. Lewis presently presides over a large-scale university consortium, which seeks to study welfare reform efforts in Illinois. He is also developing a new project that will deliver technical assistance to suburbs struggling with social problems, which will concentrate on issues of homelessness and crime prevention in its initial phase.

As a result of his many years of study, Dr. Lewis has contributed multiple articles to scholarly journals. He has written and edited several books, including his most recent book, "Gaining Ground in Illinois: Welfare Reform and Person-Centered Policy Analysis" in 2010. Furthermore, Dr. Lewis has served on various journal editorial boards as a reviewer or manuscript reviewer.

A prominent figure in is field, Dr. Lewis has been very active in his local community. He excelled as a member of the restructuring mental health services task force for the Chicago Department of Health, and was active on various committees with the Chicago Urban League, the United Way of Chicago and the Illinois Department of Mental Health. Moreover, Dr. Lewis found success on the board of directors of both the Illinois Mental Health Association and the Mental Health Association of Greater Chicago.

Dr. Lewis is an alumnus of Stanford University where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in political science, cum laude, in 1968. He later completed a Doctor of Philosophy in the history of consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1980. Named Outstanding Teacher of Social Policy in 2007 and to the Faculty Honor Roll every year from 2001 to 2004 at Northwestern University, Dr. Lewis has also been the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Northwestern University Alumni Association in 1998. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
