A tenured associate professor of studio arts since 1985, Prof. Batista has distinguished himself as a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. He first joined the staff in 1978, and initially contributed for seven years as an assistant professor in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. Presently, Prof. Batista instructs various drawing courses.
Among his other positions, Prof. Batista later served as a department chair and major advisor for the department. He also served three consecutive terms as an assistant dean of undergraduate studies in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. He was also involved with the Institute for Shipboard Education Semester-at-Sea Program. He also served on various committees, including the standing subcommittee for community relations for the faculty senate. Prof. Batista previously taught within the foundations program at the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during 1978 and was a teacher on campus from 1977 to 1978.
A featured artist of multiple solo exhibitions throughout the U.S. between 1977 and 2012, Prof. Batista has also been included in several group and faculty exhibitions, as well as national and international juried exhibitions, and earned distinction as an international artist-in-residence in Ireland and Argentina. His works have been represented in various public and private collections. Additionally, Prof. Batista was selected for inclusion in two international publications in 2018 and has notably been included in six exhibition catalogs and a textbook published by Prentice-Hall Inc.
For nearly 30 years, Prof. Batista has produced and hosted a weekly radio program dedicated to traditional music. Featured on WYEP 91.3 FM, a public radio station in Pittsburgh since 1991. 'An American Sampler' is aired on Sunday evenings from 5-8 p.m. and streams live at www.wyep.org. It is the only program in the tri-state area dedicated to traditional and contemporary folk music and acoustic blues. Aligned with several civic organizations, Prof. Batista is proud of traveling the world and earning the rank of Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm with the Boy Scouts of America.
Attending the Columbus College of Art and Design, Prof. Batista received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1975 with the sole Outstanding Senior Award. He was subsequently accepted to the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, from which he attained a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking in 1977 holding the only full assistantship the school had to offer. He has held memberships with several industry-related organizations, including the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the College Art Association. He is also a member of Folk Alliance International, a nonprofit organization which produces an annual conference that is the world's largest gathering of the folk music industry and community. Additionally, Prof. Batista is a member of the North East Folk Alliance.
During his career, Prof. Batista secured a research development fund grant in 1983, a provost grant in 1991 from the University of Pittsburgh and a visual arts fellowship for painting in 1987 from the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. Recognized on numerous occasions for his artwork with several Juror's and Purchase Awards, he also received a United States Steel Award at the 71st Annual Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Exhibition in 1981, a Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service Award from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997 and an Outstanding Alumni Award from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1989. A celebrated Marquis listee, Prof. Batista has been featured in the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
