Dr. Bainbridge, a celebrated physical therapist and athletic trainer, has excelled in her field for more than 50 years. Formerly an adjunct faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Montana (UMT), she is currently an adjunct clinical professor in the UMT College of Health Profession and Biomedical Sciences, where she teaches a course on The Health Aspects of Aging. She was active within the UMT Physical Therapy Clinic and as a consultant for the University of Montana Rural Institute. Dr. Bainbridge formerly held teaching and faculty appointments at Simmons College, Boston University, Hahnemann University, MGH Institute of Health Professions, the University of Maryland, University of Indianapolis, and Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She has presented for various organizations and associations both nationally and internationally.
Specializing in sports and fitness, Dr. Bainbridge's expertise extends to assisting clients of all ages and abilities, especially in pediatrics and geriatrics. She has worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals and specialty children's hospitals, rehabilitation and outpatient facilities and senior living environments. She owned and operated her own outpatient orthopedic-sports clinic in Missoula and St Ignatius, MT from 1991-1999. She then contributed for three years as the Director of Practice for the American Physical Therapy Association where she was involved with the addition of tests to Guide to PT Practice, development of Special Olympics FUNfitness and promotion of fitness and wellness for physical therapists. Since 2002, Dr. Bainbridge has been the owner of High Peaks Physical Therapy & Fitness Consultation, and a Global Clinical Advisor for Special Olympics International where she is responsible for coordinating global development of fitness assessment and community-based fitness programming for persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities across the lifespan.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bainbridge has provided her expertise as a physical therapy representative for the interspecialty medical advisory board for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Boston, and as the chairperson and trustee of the professional education committee of the American Lung Association in Boston. For the past 10 years, she has been a member of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), and on the Steering Committee for the Network on Health Promotion in Life and Work. She originated the WCPT Network on Intellectual and Developmental Disability in 2011, and has been Chair since its inception. Contributing to her community, Dr. Bainbridge was a member of the state summer games' management committee for the Special Olympics of Montana between 2014 and 2017 and continues to serve as consultant to SOMT.
Dr. Bainbridge received a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy in 1967 at Boston University, a Master of Science in biomechanics and sports medicine at the University of North Carolina in 1982 and Doctor of Education in motor learning and sports psychology at Boston University in 1990. While pursuing her master's degree, she also became a certified athletic trainer. Since that time, Dr. Bainbridge has contributed prolifically to peer reviewed journals, as well as book chapters in "Meeting the PT Needs of Children" and "Physical Therapy for Children." She also edited two books, "Recreation for Disabled Child" in 1984 and "Sports Physical Therapy" in 1986. Most recently, she has become certified as an Inclusive Fitness Trainer (CIFT) by the American College of Sports Medicine.
To remain relevant in her field, Dr. Bainbridge has been active with several professionally-related organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Athletic Training Association, and the Association of University Centers on Disability. Additionally, she is a member of the American Association of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, an organization created to provide a forum for healthcare professionals who provide clinical care to people with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities. A grantee recipient of the University of North Carolina in 1982 and the Foundation for Physical Therapy in 1987, Dr. Bainbridge also received the Mary Clyde Singleton Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
