An esteemed pathologist and researcher, Dr. Davis has led an impressive career in the field as an educator and as an entrepreneur. First earning his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut, further training at University of Colorado in anatomic pathology and University of California Irvine in hematopathology, he kicked off his profession as an assistant professor of pathology at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, and then associate professor at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH. Teaching and performing NIH grant funded research for 10 years, Dr. Davis then became the director of hematopathology to support the opening of bone marrow transplant services at Harris-Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, and then as an attending pathologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, where he continued to develop advances in diagnostic flow cytometry. In 2000, he founded Trillium Diagnostics LLC in Portland, ME, then moving to Bangor, ME, between 2006 and 2017. After the closing of Trillium Diagnostics through IP sales, he has since formed Bruce H. Davis, MD, Inc., a consulting firm in 2017.
During his career, Dr. Davis designed several patents for innovations in cellular diagnostic testing, has contributed more than 100 articles and scientific papers to professional publications and was the senior co-editor of "Textbook of Laboratory Hematology" in 2012. He has been recognized with several awards for his contributions, including with a Wallace H. Coulter Award by the Cytometry Society in 2004, Berend Houwen Award for Contributions to Laboratory Hematology by ISLH in 2008, an Excellence in Mentoring Award by the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute in 2007, and by being named Innovator of Year by the Maine International Trade Center in 2007, among others. Furthermore, he was the recipient of an Upjohn Medical Research Fellowship between 1986 and 1989 and received an American Cancer Society Fellowship between 1981 and 1982.
A diplomate in hematology and anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology, Dr. Davis has served as the chief scientific officer for LeukoDx, has been the vice chairman, then chair of the CLSI, formerly known as NCCLS, Area Committee of Hematology, and has been a science advisory board member for Horiba ABX Diagnostics SA since 1998.
Dr Davis is most known for his contributions to the field of cellular diagnostics. He was the one of the innovators and creators of the immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF) pointing out the diagnostic utility in the monitoring of bone marrow recovery follow bone marrow transplant and driving efforts for the standardization and adoption on automated hematology blood cell counters. He developed the first highly accurate IVD assay of fetal red blood cells applicable to all women for the detection or feto-maternal hemorrhage by using monoclonal antibodies to hemoglobin F and flow cytometry; which unfortunately did not achieve wide adoption during his life in large part due to the failure of the assay to migrate onto a 24/7 platform. His major achievement, again with the contributions of associate Nancy C. Bigelow, was the development of an IVD assay for the measurement of neutrophil CD64 as an important screen and therapeutic monitor of infection and sepsis; this too had delayed clinical adoption do the lack of a rapid turn around platform.
A believer in international diagnostic consensus, Dr Davis was longstanding member of the Society of Hematopathology, the International Society of Analytic Cytology, the College of American Pathologists, and several other professional societies. Dr. Davis was responsible for co-founding and serving on the initial board of directors and as treasurer for the International Society of Laboratory Hematology beginning in 1994 through its growth to the most authoritative global body in laboratory hematology. Notably, the society granted him with a Berend Houwen Award for his contributions in 2008. Similarly he was one of the founding board members of what today is the International Clinical Cytometry Society, later serving as both Treasurer and President and honored for his contributions to the field by being awarded the Wallace Coulter Award in 2004. A believer in community involvement, Dr. Davis has served on the school board in Lyme, NH, Treasurer of the St. Andrew's Society of Maine and as the Board of Appeals Chair and Alternate Member of the Planning Board in Clifton, ME, since 2010 to the present.
