Leading a diversified career for nearly 40 years, Ms. Barr initially worked as a teacher at the A.G. Erickson School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and subsequently rose to become the chairman of the fifth grade teachers, as well as the secretary of the curriculum council for all of Ypsilanti Public Schools. She later worked for Barr, Anhut and Associate PC in Ann Arbor as a receptionist, and as a block coordinator for Ypsilanti Recycling. For numerous years, Ms. Barr has assisted in financing an annual scholarship fund in the name of her parents, The Max John and Viola Christine Bielenberg Fund, at Ohio Northern University, as well as two under the Ypsilanti Community Fund, one of which is dedicated to music and the other in memory of her parents. She takes great pride in continuing their tradition.
Involved with a broad range of charitable and civic organizations throughout Michigan, Ms. Barr has most notably maintained activity with the Thrift Shop Association of Ypsilanti since 1969, where she has served as the chairperson of the nominating committee, the scheduling chairperson, the vice president and the president. She has also played an instrumental role with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 290 serving as a treasurer and secretary. Furthermore, she was active with the Girls Scouts of America as an assistant leader.
At Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Ms. Barr was highly active as the chairperson of the church nominating committee, the chair of fundraising, the secretary of the endowment committee, a church council member, a youth coordinator, the secretary of the youth standing committee and a chancel choir member. Moreover, she was a member of the endowment board of the HighScope Educational Research Foundation. Ms. Barr also served on the board of directors as secretary of the Ypsilanti Community Choir. She continues to sing on the choir as she has since the 1980s.
Ms. Barr first studied at Mexico City College during 1955, after which she transferred and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts. She later acquired a Master of Arts in 1959 at Eastern Michigan University. Following the conclusion of her academic efforts, Ms. Barr was certified as an elementary school teacher.
Among her many professional memberships, Ms. Barr has maintained numerous roles of leadership. She is a life member, former president and treasurer of the board of trustees of the Ladies Literary Club, a member and treasurer of the Ann Arbor chapter of the U.S. Power Squadron, a life member of the American Association of University Women, the Marquette County Historical Society and the Ypsilanti Historical Society and a member of the Genealogical Society of Washington County and the Law Wives of Washtenaw County, for which she served as newsletter co-editor in 1972. Ms. Barr has also been aligned with several honor societies, including the Beta Zeta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, for which she is a past president. She is the chairman of a gourmet arts study group, which she has done for over 50 years, with the American Association of University Women. She is currently a board member of the Ypsilanti Festival, formerly Ypsilanti Heritage Festival.
She is the author of "Memories of the V.P.; "Our Swedish Ancestors," which was written for her granddaughter Olivia Marie Barr for their trip to Scandinavia in July, 2007 (2007), "Then and Now, Memories of India," and "Grandpa, We Never Knew You! Maximilian Johannas Bielenberg 1857-1907" (2011).
In recognition of her dedication to community, Ms. Barr has received several awards, including a Women of Merit Award for Women in Scouting in 2019 and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Boy Scouts of America Troop 290 in 2018. She also received a 50-Year Service Award from the Thrift Shop of Ypsilanti in 2019 and a Community Service Award from Ypsilanti Kiwanis in 2017. She also received an award for her skiing from NASTAR; she was 5th highest in the state of Michigan. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Barr has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
Marlene Joy Bielenberg Barr has been married to John M. Barr for 65 years.
