Having accrued more than five decades of service to his patients and profession, Dr. Heffron garnered a laudable reputation as a physician and educator prior to his retirement. While coming of age, he dreamed of a career in medicine, but was steered toward journalism by a high school guidance counselor, and enrolled in the University of Missouri. While he started as a journalism student, he changed his major to pre-medicine, and completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. Accordingly, Dr. Heffron earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Missouri in 1962, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice.
From 1962 until 1963, Dr. Heffron undertook an internship at the University of California. He served his country to the rank of a lieutenant commander in the United States Public Health Service between 1964 and 1966, and continued his career as a physician at the Hospital Castaner, Puerto Rico, from 1966 to 1968. Moreover, Dr. Heffron completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico between 1968 and 1971, whereupon he joined the University of New Mexico as an assistant professor. In addition, he became involved with medical mission work at the Navajo Reservation. There, he became interested in geography, new values, new culture, new belief systems, and language. He gained a global outlook on life. Later in life, he and his wife volunteered at a mission hospital for two years, completing various surgeries and many other procedures.
Dr. Heffron advanced to become an associate professor in 1976, and subsequently maintained activity as the assistant chair of the Family Community and Emergency Medicine clinic at the University of New Mexico. In 1982, he subsequently accepted an appointment as the professor and chair of the clinic, where he would remain until 1993. He was named as the chief of medical staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital in 1993, and would continue to practice until his retirement in 2017. He has likewise found success as a visiting professor and consultant to the Punjab, India Department of Community Health. Dr. Heffron is the past president of the New Mexico chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the New Mexico Medical Society.
