To date, Ms. Santos is the only Florida lawyer to have published an academic article on blockchain in the peer-reviewed Florida Bar Journal. Over the course of her career, Ms. Santos has gained valuable legal expertise as in-house general counsel for Buffalo Pacific LLC, Iformata Communications LLC, ReddTrust LLC and Destiny Conferencing LLC. During the early and mid-2000s, she worked as a partner with Clark Law Office, a public defender in Fort Myers, Florida, the director of legal and business affairs for TeleSuite Corp., the director of contracts administration for NeoWorx and was also an IP law intern for Jaycox, Meckstroth & Jenkins.
Although her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Santos is especially proud of her work as a former public defender as it has directly influenced her practice to this day. In that role, she defended an indigent migrant worker from Guatemala who was wrongfully stopped by police while on his way to Western Union to transfer money back home to his family he had earned from picking tomatoes in commercial fields. On a search pursuant to the stop, the officer unlawfully confiscated the money the worker had saved over the previous months. While Ms. Santos was able to get the criminal charges dismissed due to a lack of evidence, because the confiscated money was a civil matter, she was unable to force the return of the funds. Motivated to solve this problem, Ms. Santos began to study blockchain and financial technology at the University of Oxford, and she is now recognized as an expert practitioner on matters of blockchain, financial technology and related data analytics tools.
Throughout her career, Ms. Santos has built a reputation for excellence through several speaking engagements, including at a press event in Washington D.C. in support of the Crypto-Currency Act of 2020 sponsored by Congressman Gosar. She has also spoken on the topics of cryptocurrency regulations at the National Press Club, blockchain for Florida government at the University of Central Florida sponsored by the James Madison Institute, the 2020 blockchain global regulatory outlook at the America's Blockchain Summit in Panama City, Panama, and many others. In addition to the article on "What's the Big Deal About Blockchain" published in the peer-reviewed academic Florida Bar Journal, Ms. Santos has produced several reports published and made publicly available through the blockchain and digital currency task force of the Florida Bar Association, including a whitepaper on the definition of blockchain, a summary report on blockchain legislation introduced into the 116th U.S. Congress, a summary review of Wyoming's blockchain legislation, and a report on blockchain use cases across 55 industries.
An expert in her field, Ms. Santos has earned three programme certificates from the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School in Blockchain Strategies and Financial Technology, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Dayton School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Wright State University.
