Carol Stormer Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Occupational Therapy



    HOQUIAM, WA, April 02, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carol Stormer, OTR, CEAS, NBCOT has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

She provided her leadership at Aurora Central High School in the National Honor Society, and was voted most talented in her high school class performing in concert band, marching band and orchestra, and playing clarinet under Byron Gillette (RIP), who led the musical groups to state competition. She also sang in the Aurora Centralettes under Karen Johnson who also led them to state competitions. Karen Johnson is now a professional artist. Excelling at math, she kept stats for multiple sports including baseball, basketball, gymnastics and performed as a twirler at football and basketball games.

She received a scholarship to Colorado State University.

She provided leadership at Colorado State University as President of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, studying and advised by Elnora Gilfoyle, a retired American occupational therapist, researcher, educator, and university administrator (Wikipedia). Ms. Stormer mentored and supported other students serving as a teaching assistant in both Anatomical Services and Death, Dying and Grief, a part of the Department of Human Development with Kevin Oltjenbruns, Faculty, Human Development and Family Studies, Associate Dean, College of Health and Human Sciences, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, CSU, 1974 – 2010.

In Memory: Colorado State University lost a great friend and leader when Kevin passed away. She was a remarkable teacher, scholar, and administrator at CSU during a career that spanned more than four decades. Her dedication to students, her leadership, and her giving spirit, were hallmarks of her service and achievements. She passed away Nov. 1, 2018, at age 69 after an extended battle with cancer.

Harboring a passion for assisting clients in building awareness and attaining adaptive coping skills for the betterment of their performance and quality of life, Carol Stormer, OTR, CEAS, NBCOT, has excelled as an occupational therapist. Prior to this appointment, she completed an internship at Colorado Mental Health Institute in Fort Logan in Denver, Colorado during which she further flourished as a mental health Occupational Therapist. She also flourished completing an internship at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, as an Occupational Therapist in Physical Disabilities. She then became Washington State's Mental Health Liason as Carol Battan, coordinating workshops and skill-building exercises to enhance the performance and confidence of young occupational therapists in Mental Health including training by Claudia Allen, MA, OTR, FAOTA, who passed away on February 25, 2019. Claudia was perhaps best known for developing the Cognitive Disabilities Model, which identifies six cognitive levels that reflect observable abilities to perform functional activities. Carol Stormer has since taken this training into numerous clinical settings of Occupational Therapy including physical disabilities, mental health, industrial rehabilitation, skilled rehabilitation centers, home health settings to help ensure medical necessity, foster and develop cognitive improvement and emphasizing maximizing patient independence in the Pacific Northwest.

Moreover, Ms. Stormer, AKA Mrs. Battan, was introduced to and later pioneered the sport of Dragonboating elected by sports leaders into the position of leader on the west-coast of USA known as the Pacific Dragonboat Association, USA, a 501c3 nonprofit operating as primary founder along with others support to become first president. She then Founded the United States Dragonboat Federation and served as President entitling the USA to host the 1st World Dragonboat Championships in Philadelphia, PA while concurrently competing on Team USA around the world. She was instrumental in organizing 3 regions in the USA assisted by numerous skilled leaders, coordinating all efforts to achieve a standardized form of competition as well as supporting friendship through paddling. She coached children, teenagers, adults and senior teams as well as coaching, mentoring and encouraging Vision Impaired, Breast Cancer, Special Needs teams and at risk youth teams. She travelled abroad facilitating others to raise funds, coordinating sponsorship and travel in this sport. She also volunteered participating in arts and craft activities, facepainting, yoga, hiking events, within the sport of Dragonboating forming family connections, friendships, using sports psychology, including mind, body spirit connections, training in breathing techniques, stretching, etc. with high regard for her Canadian mentors. All of her efforts are now provided by ongoing mentoring from herself as well as numerous others.

Previously, Ms. Stormer served in her favorite position at Providence Worker Rehabilitation Services as an Occupational Therapist flourishing in Portland, Oregon mentored by therapist Sandra Cronbaugh, OTR, (RIP) Larry Andes, Physical Therapist, retired, Robert James Corbley CRC, (RIP), Cindy Weitz VRC, retired, and working with Robert Love OTR (Former President of the Occupational Therapy Association of Oregon.) Mr. Robert Love also was introduced to the sport of Dragonboating and after the time of his passing, Ms. Stormer was given and entitled authority by OTAO to form a team in his memory given the name Stormer-Love to honor both Robert Love and Ms. Stormer (professional colleagues and respected by other recognized leaders within their chosen profession for their dedication and passion to field of Occupational Therapy). Ms. Stormer provided her expertise to Pacific University in Oregon, mentoring numerous students in Industrial Rehabilitation at Providence St Vincent.

Ms. Stormer, formerly Battan also volunteered in Cedarwood Waldorf School, Portland Public Schools and Lake Oswego High School PTA and dance team.

Furthermore, Ms. Stormer has volunteered in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. At a civic level, she has contributed as a volunteer at Grays Harbor Historical Seaport. She volunteers with them and Grays Harbor Historical Seaport helps put people into living wage jobs in the commercial maritime industry. She has participated in fundraisers for The American Heart Association, Alzheimer's Association, volunteered for the Festival of Trees for various causes, assisted in raising funds with Downs Syndrome. She found success as a public speaker as Able Toastmaster presenter to public on injuries, Parkinson's, and occupational therapy. Public Announcer in the Pacific Northwest in Dragonboating, attending conferences on mental health issues, ergonomics, injury prevention, diet and nutrition, crisis management, suicide prevention, and the effects of social media on mental health, etc.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Stormer has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. In 2014, she was presented with the Woman of the Year Award in home health from NAPW, a very strong organization in New York and California. She later accepted the Shining Star award by a nursing recommendation as an employee for Infinity Rehab after 4 years. A passionate learner who loves learning, Ms. Stormer attributes her success to her mentors, both professional, family and supportive friends which are gems.

Merging her passions Ms. Stormer has been able to continue her successful career and recover from her own personal health issues while treating others living with various physical and mental components, Specifically, she fostered an interest in bolstering psychological injury prevention, wellness and holistic care which can help with a variety of health challenges. Believing that anything is possible when someone decides to take the path that works for them, Ms. Stormer hopes to further her outstanding results in her current practices while handling increasing caseloads and continue to develop more programs.
