Aligned with Kobe University since 1977, he is a professor emeritus of medicine, and previously taught and chaired the department of microbiology in the school of medicine as a professor from 1994 until his retirement in 2015, followed by serving as an endowed professor in the graduate school of health sciences until 2018. Dr. Hotta likewise served in numerous directorial roles, including for the Institute for Experimental Animals, the International Center for Medical Research, the International Center for Medical Research and Treatment, and the Center for Infectious Diseases, and provided his expertise as a counselor and the vice dean of the graduate school of medicine at Kobe University. Additionally, Dr. Hotta has been aligned with the University of Indonesia since 2012 as an adjunct professor and Airlangga University since 2013 as an honorary professor.
Prior to his extensive academic career, Dr. Hotta found success as an associate professor in microbiology at Kobe University between 1988 and 1994, and as a research associate between 1977 and 1986. Meanwhile, he worked for two years as a visiting scientist at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia in 1986 and 1987. He also worked for three years in the field as an internal medicine physician at Osaka University Hospital and Hyogo Prefectural Nishinomiya Hospital. Associated with several academia/industry-related organizations, Dr. Hotta is a member and past president of the Japanese Society for Virology. He is also a member of the Japanese Society for Bacteriology, the Japanese Society for Immunology and, among others, the Asia-Pacific Society for Medical Virology.
Dr. Hotta provided his considerable talents as a project leader of several international collaborative research and education programs, beginning with the Tropical Disease Control Project in Indonesia during the early 1990s. He was also a leader for a project of the Japan Initiative for Global Research Network on Infectious Diseases supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and a project of the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. As a researcher, Dr. Hotta drew particular gratification from finding the mechanisms of the hepatitis C virus, which led to the diabetic condition. He has contributed more than 250 articles to professional journals as a result of his many years of study, as well as several textbooks on microbiology for medical students.
Following in the footsteps of his parents, who were both physicians, Dr. Hotta's father also taught at Kobe University. While coming of age, he developed an interest in medicine and later chose to concentrate on virology because of the many patients he saw suffering from lethal diseases like hepatitis when he was a clinician. Dr. Hotta notably attained a Doctor of Medicine at Osaka University in the school of medicine in 1974, and subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy at Kobe University in the graduate school of medicine in 1985.
In 2009, Dr. Hotta was recognized for his medical accomplishments with an Excellence Award from the Asia-Pacific Society for Medical Virology. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in over 15 editions of Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World. Outside of his professional circles, Dr. Hotta enjoys such diversions as playing the piano and tennis.
