Dr. Bursey is celebrated for his considerable contributions to science education, science and the history of science at several educational institutions. He initially earned a Bachelor of Arts from The Johns Hopkins University in 1959. Dr. Bursey concluded his academic efforts there with a Master of Arts in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1963.
Beginning his career as a lecturer at The Johns Hopkins University from 1963 to 1964, Dr. Bursey subsequently served as a visiting assistant professor at Purdue University from 1964 to 1966. He rapidly advanced at the University of North Carolina as assistant professor of chemistry from 1966 to 1969 and then associate professor from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 to 1996, Dr. Bursey served as a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina before obtaining emeritus status.
The author of several textbooks and monographs and the editor of Mass Spectrometry Reviews from 1990 to 1993, Dr. Bursey has been affiliated with the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, Alpha Chi Sigma, and the American Chemical Society. In the second of these, he was president (Grand Master Alchemist) from 1986 to 1988, and in the last a director representing the southeastern United States from 1992 until 2001. A fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the Royal Society of Chemistry, he was inducted into the Society of Fellows at The Johns Hopkins University in 1982. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Bursey has been the recipient of numerous research grants, and was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and other biographical guides.
