Supported by more than 40 years of innovation in the field of engineering, Dr. Coughlin is an expert in digital storage and a pioneer in magnetic recording technologies. A naturally gifted student, he attributes his interest in engineering to the creativity and imagination that he developed reading science fiction as a child. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1977 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1981. Concluding his academic efforts, Dr. Coughlin completed a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering at Shinshu University, Japan, in 2007.
From 1980 until 1983, Dr. Coughlin worked as an associate engineer for 3M Corporation. He contributed between 1983 and 1985 as an engineer for Nortronics of Minneapolis, and found subsequent success as a principal engineer for Polaroid Corporation from 1985 to 1987. Continuing his career, Dr. Coughlin excelled as a senior engineer at Seagate Technology from 1987 until 1989, whereupon he joined Maxtor, for which he would serve as a manager until 1991.
Dr. Coughlin was a director at Micropolis in Chatsworth, California, between 1991 and 1993, and the vice president of new product integration for Nashua Computer Products from 1993 to 1994. He transitioned towards an administrative role in 1996, when he became the director of business development for Ampex Corporation as well as creating and operating a development laboratory. Dr. Coughlin was director of advanced head and media development for Syquest Technology from 1998 until 1999, and began Coughlin Associates Inc, a consulting and digital storage analyst firm, in 2000.
Dr. Coughlin was an adjunct faculty staff member at the engineering school of Santa Clara University from 1999 to 2002. He is the author of more than 50 peer reviewed articles on magnetic recording and other digital storage technologies as well as numerous trade articles, presentations, webinars, book chapters and a book, Digital Storage in Consumer Electronics: The Essential Guide now in its second edition with Springer, and holds several patents for magnetic recording heads and media. Dr. Coughlin is a fellow and past IEEE-USA president (as well as many other IEEE volunteer leadership roles), and a member of the American Physical Society, American Vacuum Society, the Storage Networking Industry Association and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
