Dr. Jerry Gebhard is the author of three editions of "Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Self-Development and Methodology Guide" (University of Michigan Press)

    HONOLULU, HI, April 08, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jerry Gebhard, EdD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Gebhard is renowned as a retired Emeritus professor of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Second Language Teacher Education with a career spanning more than 40 years. While serving in the United States Army Security Agency in Thailand he learned to speak Thai and Laotian and fell in love with the perspective that language learning afforded him. Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Gebhard earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at Temple University in 1974 and a Master of Arts in English as a Second Language at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 1976.

From 1976 to 1978, Dr. Gebhard began his career as a cross-cultural communication sensitivity trainer in Tokyo with Heuristic Associates. He also taught at Thammasat University, Thailand from 1978 to 1980. In 1985, he obtained Doctor of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language at Teachers College, Columbia University while also teaching in the MA TESOL Program. Dr. Gebhard further flourished as a professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) from 1985 to 2007 and Pusan National University (Korea) from 2008 to 2011.

Dr. Gebhard is the author of three editions of "Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Self-Development and Methodology Guide" (University of Michigan Press), "Language Teaching Awareness: A Guide to Exploring Beliefs and Practices (Cambridge University Press), and "What Do International Students Think and Feel? Adapting to U.S. College Life and Culture" (University of Michigan Press).

Among his other achievements, he has published extensively in prestigious journals and contributed many book chapters in edited books. He also won five Academic Specialist Awards from the United States Department of State and a Soros Foundation Award for his work in Hungary, as well as directed the MA TESOL program and the Ph.D. Program in Composition & TESOL at IUP. He also served as the President of Three Rivers TESOL and the Chair of the Teacher Education interest section for International TESOL, as well as supervised many graduate students in language education, and hopes to continue to utilize his voice and experience to instill passion for culture and TESOL to other educators.
