John Prescott, AC is renowned as an industrial relations manager and resources industry executive with more than 60 years of innovation in his fields. He began his career in the steel and shipping industries with The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (now the BHP Group), earned a Bachelor of Commerce (with a major in Industrial Relations) in 1962. He moved to line transport positions in 1973 and became General Manager of BHP Transport from 1982 -1987.
He was appointed by the Australian Government to its Transport Industries Advisory Council from 1982 – 1987 (deputy chairman 1986-1987), the Australian Shipping Defence Council 1982-1987, the Council of the Australian Maritime College 1983-1987 and the Defence Industry Committee 1998-1993.
He became Chief Executive Officer of BHP Steel in 1987, a director of BHP itself in 1998 and Managing Director and CEO of the group in 1991.
During this period and later he further served the Federal and State Governments in various roles including as Chairman of the Australian Manufacturing Council 1990-1995, Joint Head of the Australian Submarine Project Review 1999, Advisor to the Minister for Defence 2000, Chairman Australian Submarine Corporation 2000 -2009 and Chairman Queensland Rail 2006-2010. Part of later company was privatised as QR National Limited (later Aurizon Holdings Limited) and he was Chairman 2010-2015.
From 2010-2016 he was appointed a Member of the Australian Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal which sets remuneration for federal Ministers, other parliamentarians and holders of senior public positions.
He has held many other industry and community roles in Australia and internationally, the latter including a director of Normandy Mining Limited 1999-2002, Newmont Mining Corporation 2002-2013, trustee of The Conference Board 1995-2001 (then a Global Counsellor 2001-2016), a director of the World Economic Forum 1996-1998 and several advisory boards.
Aside from his other community activities, he is chairman of a charitable organization from which his family supports medical research, university education, the performing arts, social and public welfare services and some environmental activities.
With Stephen J. Drotter he is the author of "The Succession Pipeline: How to Get the Talent You Need When You Need It" (Motivational Press 2018) and currently in preparation "How to Keep The Dream Alive: Succession Planning for Entrepreneurs".
Mr. Prescott attributes his success to putting emphasis on the human side of business, having strong mentors and advisors, taking unexpected opportunities and in the absence of personally having technical expertise being able to lead those who do: "distilling a strategic view of things".
He is a Past President of the Institute of Public Affairs as well as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Institute of Management and the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He was granted an honorary Doctor of Laws from Monash University in 1994 and an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of New South Wales in 1995. He was honoured with a Companion in the Order of Australia in 1996 and an Australian Centenary Medal in 2002.
