Mr. Watts is renowned as an educator and visual artist with more than five decades of innovation in his medium. Completing coursework at the Plymouth College of Art from 1964 to 1966, he subsequently earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of London in 1969. Mr. Watts concluded his studies with a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University.
Mr. Watts began his career as a graduate assistant at Ohio University from 1969 to 1971 and as an instructor of drawing and sculpture at the University of Rhode Island from 1971 to 1973. He further flourished as a lecturer at Trent Polytechnic Institute in Nottingham, England from 1973 to 1978 and visiting artist from 1974 to 1978. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Watts later served as the chair of the art department and a gallery director at the Cornish Institute in Seattle until 1984.
From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Watts worked as the chair of the arts department at Middle Tennessee State University. Appointed as the chair of fine arts at Washington State University in 1988, he eventually obtained professor emeritus status from the aforementioned university in 2015. A former member of the Seattle Arts Council, he has provided his professional expertise to numerous arts organizations and galleries in the Seattle area. Exhibited in group and solo shows worldwide since the 1970s, Mr. Watts' art has been represented in the permanent collections of the Carnegie Museum, the Washington State Arts Commission and several corporations.
