Dr. Djordjevic likewise bears much fluency in the areas of technology development, technology transfer and technical education.
Retiring in 2018 as the founder, president and chief executive officer of Materials and Sensors Technologies Inc. (MAST Inc.) after 24 years, Dr. Djordjevic's company specializes in nondestructive evaluation and materials engineering. He previously worked on behalf of Johns Hopkins University, for which he was a principal research scientist and the associate director and director of the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation. Formerly aligned with the Martin Marietta Laboratories in Baltimore as a scientist, senior scientist and manager of research and engineering, he notably served as the manager of the nondestructive evaluation department and the evaluation and subsystem engineering department. For a brief time during his career, Dr. Djordjevic was also a faculty member at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Hired in 1991, he contributed for two years as an adjunct professor and graduate student advisor.
Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Djordjevic was responsible for numerous developments in his field, including pioneering technology and technology development for the testing of composites in aircraft structures, including the first industrial ultrasonic robotic system in 1981. He has conducted extensive research in optical probing of stress waves and prognostic NDE and materials characterization, was a principal investigator for over 40 development projects, including industrial research and development contract programs, and holds seven patents, including for ultrasonic technology and sensing. As a result of his research, Dr. Djordjevic has edited eight books and has contributed multiple articles to various scholarly journals.
Dr. Djordjevic received a Bachelor of Science in physics at the College of William and Mary in 1973. He subsequently attended Johns Hopkins University, where he attained both a Master of Science in Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering and materials science in 1978 and 1979, respectively. In 1979, Dr. Djordjevic completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Djordjevic has been affiliated with numerous industry-related organizations. He is a member and former board director of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, a member and former division chairman of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, and a member, former chairman and research council member of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. Among other organizations, Dr. Djordjevic is a member of the American Society for Materials, ASTM International, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Physical Society, American Acoustical Society, and is an elected fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing.
During his career at Martin Marietta Laboratories, Dr. Djordjevic received an Outstanding Achievement Award in 1983 and 1984. He was also the recipient of the Martin Marietta Jefferson Cup in 1984, the corporation's highest award for outstanding technical achievement. He later received a Research Award for Sustained Excellence from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing in 2014.
