During his extensive career, he was employed with Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, as a physicist, and subsequently held appointments with IBM, the T.J. Watson Research Center, Applied Materials Inc., KLA-Tencor and First Solar. He also briefly worked in academia as a visiting scientist in the department of physics at on behalf of the State University of New York between 1976 and 1978 and, after returning to his home country of China, taught as a physics professor and served as the director of materials characterization at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1996 to 1998.

In pursuing a formal education, Dr. Yu attained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Hong Kong in 1967. After making his way to the U.S., he later graduated with a doctorate degree at California Institute of Technology in 1974. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Yu maintains his membership with the American Vacuum Society. He is also an elected fellow of the American Physical Society.
