From 1984 to 1987, he served as a Lecturer in Mathematics at San Diego State University. He joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1988 as an Assistant Professor, rising to become an Associate Professor in 1994 and a Professor in 1999. Dr. Long worked as the Associate Dean of the University of California, Santa Cruz's Jack Baskin School of Engineering from 1998 until 2001, and as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies from 2004 to 2010. Dr. Long was named the Kumar Malavalli Endowed Chair Professor in 2005.
Dr. Long attended San Diego State University, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science. He continued his education at the University of California, San Diego, completing a Master of Science in 1986 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988.
From 2001 to 2019, Dr. Long has garnered a laudable reputation as the Director of the Storage Systems Research Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been recognized as a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the university since 2017. Moreover, Dr. Long has contributed his services as a Visiting Faculty Member at institutions including the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers of France, the Université Paris-Dauphine, the University of Technology, Sydney, and the United States Naval Postgraduate School; as a Visiting Scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; and as an Associate Member at the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
Dr. Long has authored hundreds of articles in professional journals. He has served on the editorial boards of journals including the International Journal in Computer Simulation, as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers, and as the Editor-in-Chief for the ACM Transactions on Storage and the IEEE Letters of the Computer Society. Among many other accolades, he has won distinction as a grantee of numerous National Science Foundation research grants and is the recipient of IBM Faculty Awards for research innovation. To remain well-versed in the intricacies of his career path, Dr. Long is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
