Enjoying a long and successful career in education, Dr. Dorris initially taught biology in public schools in Benton and Ponotoc, Mississippi, and Wilmot, Arkansas between 1956 and 1962. She subsequently contributed for four years as a graduate assistant at the University of Mississippi while pursuing MS and Ph.D degrees. In 1966, Dr. Dorris was acquired by Henderson State University, where she worked for the remainder of her career in teaching Biology. An expert in field zoology, entomology, ichthyology, orinthology, herpetology and other areas of the field, she distinguished herself for 30 years on campus as a full professor and the chairperson of the department of biology. Officially retiring from the classroom in 1996, she was also a Simmental cattle rancher for over 25 years.
During her illustrious career, Dr. Dorris received a contract and grant for the biological inventory of the Red River from Shreveport, Louisiana, to Index, Arkansas. A seasoned researcher, Dr. Dorris has collected and identified over 530 species of spiders in Arkansas, and has contributed to over 40 articles and scientific manuscripts to peer reviewed journals, written several biology laboratory manuals and handbooks and authored several books, including "God and Nature" in 2003, which was inspired by her closeness to nature and all living things, "Yesterday, Today and Evermore" in 2018 and "Deer Hunting from the Cradle to the Grave" in 2020.
A dedicated advocate for her community, Dr. Dorris has led several initiatives. She also contributed as a member of the Arkadelphia Water and Sewer Commission between 1980 and 2009. Likewise, she consulted for area hospitals, public schools, local communities and emergency groups on the brown recluse spider and poisonous snake bites, as well as for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in DeGray Lake, Arkansas. Dr. Dorris has remained a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Commission in Arkadelphia since 1983.
Dr. Dorris attended Mississippi College where she acquired a Bachelor of Science, with distinction, in 1956. She later completed both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Mississippi in 1963 and 1967, respectively. To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Dorris has been very active with several industry-related organizations. She was a member, and the first female president of the constitutional committee of the Arkansas Academy of Science. Other memberships to her credit include the American Arachnology Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
She has authored and published more than 40 scientific manuscripts in various state and national journals. She has written biology laboratory manuals and handbooks.
