She attended the University of Texas, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967, and a Masters of Social Work in 1969. Ms. Rider is a licensed clinical social worker, LCSW, a board approved supervisor, board certified nationally in clinical social work, and is a certified group psychotherapist.
From 1969 until 1977, Ms. Rider practiced at the Austin Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center (now known as Integral Care Center) in the outpatient adult mental health services department. She was a consultant for the Austin Model Cities Project from 1971 to 1972. She also served as a community organization specialist for the project's alcohol-related services from 1974 to 1976. Ms. Rider was appointed as an Assistant Professor and clinical faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work from 1977 to 1981. She has been in the independent practice of social work since 1977 in Austin, Texas serving individuals, couples, families, children and adolescents.
Ms. Rider served as an adjunct faculty member of the Behavioral Health Sciences Department at St Edward's University for over ten (10) years teaching family and gruup therapy courses to undergraduate students. She was also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas School of Social Work for several years teaching clinical social work courses to second year graduate students. Ms. Rider is a former clinical staff member of the Austin Regional Clinic. Ms. Rider was elected to the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees in 1992 serving for over ten (10) years, eight of those years as President of the AlSO Board of Trustees. She was named as a Charles Wright Distinguished Alumni of the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work in 2001. She was named a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association in 2010. She currently serves on the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health Board of Directors and the Clinical Social Work Association Board. She also serves as the governmental affairs director of the Texas Society for Clinical Social Work. Ms. Rider is a member of The Settlement Club of Austin which supports The Settlement Home for Children, a residential treatment center in Austin which has been existence for over one hundred (100) years.
