Following three years of military service in 1954, Dr. Fisher returned to school to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science, and began working with the National Academy of Science as an assistant bridge research engineer. During this time, he developed his initial fascination with bridge engineering, and was motivated to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy from Lehigh University, where he would remain in a professional capacity for 42 years of his career. In addition to his various teaching and administrative positions, Dr. Fisher likewise served as a lecturer and consultant in his field, and as a visiting professor and scholar at several international institutions.
Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus at Lehigh University, Dr. Fisher's legacy and impact remains ongoing through the work of his master's and doctorate students and his consultant activities. In his career, he assisted the American Association of State and Highway Officials, the American Railway Engineering Association, and the American Institute of Steel Construction in changing specification provisions. As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Fisher authored several industry and educational texts and contributed over 300 articles to professional journals. For his accomplishments as a professor, researcher and consultant, he has received many accolades and honors. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1986. He has been recognized by the Transportation Research Board, the Franklin Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers with numerous awards including elected a Distinguished Member and the OPAL award in education, and the John Fritz Medal from the Engineering Societies of the United Engineering Foundation, as well as numerous other prestigious organizations.
Civically, Dr. Fisher has maintained his affiliation with the Fritz Memorial Methodist Church, New Bethany Ministries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Professionally, he has been a Distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Institute of Steel Construction, the American Welding Society, the Transportation Research Board and the American Society of Engineering Educators. Outside of his professional circles Dr. Fisher enjoys such diversions as hiking, swimming and photography.
