Dr. Kinman has been renowned as a professor emeritus of the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Cincinnati. An environmental consultant and the founder of RNK Environmental Inc., his research activities include the disinfection of water with ozone, elemental iodine disinfection of polluted water, mixtures of halogens treatment and disposal of water treatment plant wastes, and solid and hazardous waste disposal. Dr. Kinman has also researched the formation of halogenated organics in drinking water, reverse osmosis treatment of polluted waters, biodegradation of solid waste, solidification and stabilization of hazardous waste, trace VOCs from sanitary landfills and anaerobic degradation of complex organics.
Dr. Kinman has taught a range of courses on waste water and solid waste to students, primarily at the graduate level. He also trained operators in the military in the Philippines and other areas. He is the author of technical publications as well as the book "The Disinfection of Public Water Supplies with Elemental Iodine," which was lauded by scholars for its cultural importance. He has also consulted with the World Health Organization on solid and hazardous wastes and with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Office of Solid and Hazardous Wastes. Moreover, Dr. Kinman has been active as a keynote speaker in Ohio and China and a scientific reviewer for the EPA and the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Kinman served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1959 to 1967, retiring with the rank of captain. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida, a career highlight since he was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. Additionally, Dr. Kinman is registered as a professional engineer in Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia, and a professional land surveyor in Kentucky.
Dr. Kinman began his career at the University of Cincinnati, progressing from an associate professor to a professor between 1968 and 2001. Other roles he has held include the scientist administrator for research and development with the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration from 1966 to 1968 and a water department engineer in Dayton, Ohio, from 1959 to 1963. A member of the Advisory Committee for Citizens-Scientists, Dr. Kinman further flourished as the president of Pristine Inc.
A lifetime member of the Water Environment Federation and the American Water Works Association, the latter of which he has been recruited to a number of committees, Dr. Kinman holds membership with the American Society of Civil Engineers, the water and wastewater division of the American Chemistry Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Federal Water Quality Association, the Air and Waste Management Association, the Water Pollution Control Federation, the Air Pollution Control Association, the American Men of Science and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. Appointed as a research committee chair and a member of the board of directors of the Water and Wastewater Technical School, he was additionally active as the chair of the Disposers Committee for Hamilton County, Ohio, and a member of the Solid Waste Management Policy Committee for Northern Kentucky. The recipient of a Kidney Foundation Grant Award, Dr. Kinman has been featured in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education.
He owns two patents: one for water disinfection with elemental iodine (1970) and the other formunicipal sewage sludge disposal (2004)
