A renowned psychologist, therapist, educator and author, Dr. Forrest has served as the executive director of Psychotherapy Associates, PC, and the Institute for Addictive Behavioral Change in Colorado Springs since 1976. His long and distinguished career in the field began in 1969 as an associate researcher at the University of North Dakota in the department of psychiatry, school of medicine, after which he became the clinical director of the alcohol rehabilitation program in the department of psychiatry at the Fort Gordon Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center, Georgia. Dr. Forrest subsequently joined the first Community Mental Health Center at the Medical College of Georgia in 1973. He later worked as a psychologist, and excelled as the president of the psychology division at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO, between 2000 and 2003.
Dr. Forrest began as a teaching assistant, instructor and practicum supervisor in the counseling department at the University of North Dakota in 1967. He subsequently taught psychology at Augusta College, and was a practicum supervisor and instructor in the Counseling Psychology Department at the University of Denver. Dr. Forrest was likewise a visiting professor of psychology, counseling and guidance at the University of Northern Colorado and, ultimately, found success as an executive faculty member of the Colorado School of Professional Psychology from 1996 until 2007.
Dr. Forrest's career has led him to consult for several organizations throughout the length of his career. He continues to direct his annual Psychotherapy Associates PC's annual winter symposium on "Addictive Disorders, Behavioral Health and Mental Health," which he founded and is nearing its 50th year. A prolific author, Dr. Forrest has published fourteen books. His latest, titled "Therapeutic Alliance in Integrative Addictions-Focused Psychotherapy and Counseling: Enhancing Outcomes and Recovery," will be available in 2020. Additional books to his credit include "Self-Disclosure in Psychotherapy and Recovery," "Alcoholism, Narcissism, and Psychopathology," "Alcoholism and Human Sexuality," "Countertransference in Chemical Dependency Counseling," "Intensive Psychotherapy of Alcoholism" and "How to Live with a Problem Drinker and Survive."
Contributing to his community for many years, Dr. Forrest first served on the board of directors for the Riegel Center at Penrose Community Hospital from 1980 to 1983. He later became an advisory board member for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in Colorado Springs between 1982 and 1985 and a board member of ARP, Inc. for the Colorado Department of Corrections between 1985 and 2003. Years later, Dr. Forrest maintained activity on the board of Pikes Peak Mental Health Center in 1996, a role he maintained until 2002.
Dr. Forrest received a Bachelor of Arts at Westminster College in 1965 and a Master of Education at the University of Missouri in 1967. Drafted into the U.S. Army, he was able to defer conscription for three years to pursue additional schooling. Attending the University of North Dakota, Dr. Forrest entered the Reserve Officers' Training Corps department and attained a Doctor of Education in 1970.
Dr. Forrest then became a first lieutenant signal corps officer assigned to Fort Gordon Hospital in the department of social work services, as well as the department of psychiatry, alcohol and drug rehab center before ultimately acquiring a diploma at the University of Oklahoma. He concluded his academic efforts in 1984, having obtained a Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia Pacific University. Dr. Forrest is a diplomate in psychotherapy and chemical dependency counseling through the International Academy of Professional Counseling and Psychotherapy and a licensed clinical psychologist in Colorado. To remain aware of developments in his field, he is a life member of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. Dr. Forrest is also a member of the National Register of Health Service Psychology Providers and several honor societies.
Inducted into the Brookfield Missouri Hall of Fame in 2014, Dr. Forrest previously received the President's Award from the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals in 2013. He was also honored with a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the department of counseling psychology and community services at the University of North Dakota in 2008, an Alumni Achievement Award from Westminster College in 1987 and a National Service Award from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in 1981. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Forrest has been cited in the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the West and the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
