Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in the field of health care management, Mr. Cohen was hired by Lumex Inc., a medical supply company headquartered in Bay Shore, New York, in 1966. Employed by the organization for over 40 years, he affiliated in numerous roles on behalf of the company, from controller, treasurer and secretary, to president of the division, vice president and ultimately as the chairman, president and chief executive officer between 1986 and 1994. Following the path set down by his family, who also earned distinction in the medical supply field, Mr. Cohen thoroughly enjoyed his career. After retiring from Lumex, he joined LARC Strategic Concepts LLC as a health care management consultant in 1999.
Throughout his celebrated career, Mr. Cohen was aligned with Medmarc as the chairperson of the executive committee. Instrumental in the organization's growth, which notably led to the creation of an offshore company in Bermuda, Medmarc collaborates with manufacturers and distributors of medical technology and life sciences products by providing a variety of insurance coverage resolutions. Mr. Cohen was also active with Liberty Mutual as a member of the advisory board, the Corporation Performance Consultant Management as a senior consultant and the Health Industry Manufacturers Association as its vice chairperson. In a career suffused with highlights, Mr. Cohen was most proud of the acquisition of Cybex, which became a dominant force in field of fitness equipment.
Aligned with several civic organizations related to the medical field, Mr. Cohen chaired the Southside Hospital Annual Ball and co-chaired the Helen Keller Services Sound and Light Ball, was an honorary co-chairperson of the Alzheimer's Association, vice chairperson and a member of the finance leadership committee of the Third Annual Memory Walk. He was also a member of the Special Olympics in Long Island, New York, and earned distinction on the board of directors of The Club at Admirals Cove in Jupiter, FL, the Long Island Education Conference Board and the Long Island Association, for which he was the vice chairperson. Additionally, Mr. Cohen maintained involvement as a member and trustee of the Long Island chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, was deputy mayor and police commissioner of the Village of Brookville and a member, president and council member of his alma mater, Dowling College.
Mr. Cohen received a Bachelor of Arts in economics at Cornell University in 1954. He subsequently joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he contributed for two years as a Lieutenant JG between 1954 and 1956. Mr. Cohen later attained a Doctor of Philosophy in commercial science, with honors, at Dowling College in 1993.
In honor of his service in the military, Mr. Cohen was decorated with a Korean Service Medal. In recognition of his life's work, he was a United Cerebral Palsy Association honoree in 1991 and received a Distinguished Citizen's Award from Dowling College in 1993. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Cohen has been showcased in over 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the East.
Born in Woodmere, New York, in June of 1932, Mr. Cohen was the son of Irving and Helen Cohen. He later married his wife Ilene in 1968 and were joined in union for nearly 51 years. He was also the proud father of three children. Mr. Cohen passed away in October 2019. He is survived by his wife Ilene Cohen.
