Dr. Unrue is renowned as a writer and educator with more than five decades of excellence in her discipline. She earned a B.A. in Psychology at Marshall University in 1960 and an M.A. in English at Marshall in 1964. She received a Ph.D. in English from the Ohio State University in 1971, and in 1972 she joined the English Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she remained until she retired in 2014 as Emerita Distinguished Professor of English.
Although Professor Unrue has published numerous articles on a variety of literary subjects, she is best known for her work on the American modernist writer Katherine Anne Porter. Her nine books include editions of Porter's poetry (Katherine Anne Porter's Poetry, 1996), Porter's book reviews ("This Strange, Old World" and Other Book Reviews by Katherine Anne Porter, 1991), and Porter's letters (Selected Letters of Katherine Anne Porter: Chronicles of a Modern Woman, 2012). Professor Unrue also collected and edited "Critical Essays on Katherine Anne Porter" (1997) and reminiscences and interviews for Katherine Anne Porter Remembered (2010). Her critical studies of Katherine Anne Porter include Truth and Vision in Katherine Anne Porter's Fiction (1985) and Understanding Katherine Anne Porter (1988). Professor Unrue's major publications are the Library of America's Katherine Anne Porter: Collected Stories and Other Writings (2008) and her definitive biography of Porter, "Katherine Anne Porter: The Life of an Artist" (2005), for which she received the Eudora Welty Prize for Excellence in Modern Letters and the Liz Carpenter Award from the Texas State Historical Association for the best book about a Texas woman.
Professor Unrue, the inaugural president of the Katherine Anne Porter Society, has presented numerous literary papers in both the United States and Europe. In Nevada she was active in university, community, and state organizations, including the Nevada Press Board and events sponsored by the Nevada Humanities Committee. The UNLV Alumni Association honored her with the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1992. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, National Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society, and Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology. She is listed in Who's Who of American Women, The World Who's Who of Women, The Dictionary of International Biography, Contemporary Authors, The Writers Directory, The International Who's Who of Authors and Writers, Who's Who of America's Teachers, and Who's Who in American Education.
