Mr. Ellsworth has been the president of the Legler Benbough Foundation since 1996, a non-profit charitable foundation that supports a disadvantaged neighborhood in southeast San Diego, the research and innovation activity surrounding the University of California and cultural institutions in Balboa Park. He formerly spent 10 years in health care as president and chief executive officer of Sharp HealthCare in San Diego. Additionally, Mr. Ellsworth devoted 28 years as a private practice attorney ultimately serving as president of Ellsworth, Corbett, Seitman and McLeod before leaving the practice of law to enter the health care field.
Mr. Ellsworth greatly enjoyed to opportunity to assist his community by leading the Legler Benbough Foundation. In April 2020, the story of the foundation will notably be brought to light in a book authored by a nationally recognized historian. While in health care, Mr. Ellsworth was instrumental in growing his single hospital facility into a large health care system comprised of seven hospitals and three medical groups located throughout San Diego. He also made significant improvements to the medical system, which resulted in employee efficiency. Meanwhile, as an attorney, he represented various estate planning matters, including charitable trusts, families in various other interests such as property ownership, and litigation.
A leader in various civic interests, Mr. Ellsworth spent time as the president of the San Diego Blood Bank, the Combined Arts and Education Council of San Diego County and the Children's Dental Health Association. He was a member of the primary care committee of the National Academy of Science in Washington, D.C., and was active on the board of directors of numerous organizations including the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Opera, the Committee of 100, the Neuroscience Institute and the San Diego Grantmakers. Currently, he remains active on numerous civic and philanthropic advisory boards.
Mr. Ellsworth received a bachelor's degree and law degree at Stanford University in California in 1953 and 1956, respectively, and was soon after admitted to practice by the State Bar of California. He then served two years in the United States Army before being discharged in 1959 and entering law.
As an attorney, Mr. Ellsworth has been aligned with the California Bar Association as a member and the American Bar Association as an elected fellow. Named Mr. San Diego for his years of dedication and community involvement, he is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been cited in the 49th and 50th editions of Who's Who in America and the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the West.
